While the Texas Rangers have been focused on improving their pitching, the team took another step in doing just that on Tuesday.
On Tuesday night, the Rangers announced that they've reached agreement with pitcher Alexis Díaz on a one-year contract. Díaz's name might sound familiar to hardcore MLB fans. He pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Atlanta Braves last season.
But Díaz has a famous brother. Who is that? None other than new Dodgers relief ace Edwin Díaz, who signed a three-year deal to pitch for Los Angeles during the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
Last season, Díaz posted an 8.15 ERA in 18 games for those three teams. But he really did show some solid stuff between 2022-24 for the Reds, according to a story from The Associated Press.
Díaz recorded 75 saves while having an ERA of 3.10 through 190 games for the Reds. He was pretty good in that stretch, especially in 2022. In 59 games that season, Díaz posted a 7-3 record with a 1.84 ERA and 10 saves. He finished in fifth place for National League Rookie of the Year honors that season, too.
In 2023, Díaz was an All-Star and he finished with a 9-6 mark and a 3.07 ERA with 71 games for Cincinnati.
Now, with all that information, what does this mean for the Rangers heading into next season?
It means that Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young and general manager Ross Fenstermaker are very serious about revamping the bullpen.
On Monday, Texas added Tyler Alexander to their pitching staff, too. The Rangers know that they need to have an effective bullpen. Texas has to have some better efforts out of their relievers to back up their starters.
When Texas manager Skip Schumaker considers making a move during a ballgame, the number of options he has available now looks a lot better.
Despite Díaz playing for three teams last season, he has shown, in the past, an ability to notch up saves when it mattered. If he can find his rhythm that worked so well back in 2022 once again, then Texas might have gotten a sweet deal.
The Rangers, like every other MLB team, knows that Spring Training really is just around the corner, And the 2026 MLB season is now less than 100 days away, too.
Díaz will have time to get used to his Rangers teammates when Texas opens camp in Surprise, Ariz.
