With the American League West lead gone, the Texas Rangers could bolster its relief corps by reuniting with John King, who brings low-cost efficiency.
The Texas Rangers have watched their lead in the American League West disappear. Right now, they trail the Houston Astros by half a game entering Saturday’s action. This increases the importance of every decision they make before Monday’s MLB Trade Deadline.
While Texas has already taken steps to strengthen its roster, additional bullpen help could still make a meaningful difference during the stretch run.
The Rangers have already completed one trade that addressed two areas of need, acquiring reliever Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Los Angeles Angels.
Even after those additions, another experienced reliever would further strengthen a bullpen expected to carry a heavy workload throughout the final two months.
Why King can help Rangers
One intriguing option could be Miami Marlins left-hander John King.
King is hardly an unfamiliar name in Arlington.
He pitched for the Rangers from 2020 through 2023 before being included in the trade with the St. Louis Cardinals that brought Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton to Texas at the deadline.
Since joining Miami, King has developed into one of the Marlins’ most dependable bullpen arms.
The left-hander owns a 6-2 record with a 2.51 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, one save and four holds in 43 innings over 43 appearances (one start) this season. He has recorded 32 strikeouts against 12 walks while limiting opposing hitters to a .160 batting average.
His profile also fits what the Rangers value.
King generates a high chase rate and consistently keeps the ball on the ground, two qualities that translate particularly well at Globe Life Field. Those traits would also make him a strong complement to the left-handed relievers already on the roster.
From a financial standpoint, the move would remain manageable.
Texas would only assume the remaining portion of King’s $1.5 million salary, and he remains arbitration eligible next season, providing value beyond the current postseason push.
That combination of affordability, familiarity, and effectiveness could make him one of the Rangers’ more logical bullpen targets.
King’s value
King’s success is built on more than raw velocity. He understands how to attack hitters, work efficiently, and trust his approach regardless of the situation.
His ability to induce weak contact and avoid unnecessary traffic on the bases makes him particularly valuable in high-leverage moments.
He also brings familiarity with the Rangers organization, eliminating much of the adjustment period that often accompanies deadline acquisitions.
Having previously pitched in Texas, he understands the expectations, environment, and demands that come with competing in Arlington.
Another important quality is his adaptability. King has accepted different bullpen responsibilities throughout his career. He’s demonstrated the willingness to contribute wherever he is needed rather than focusing on one specific role.
Adding a reliable left-hander who combines experience, efficiency, affordability, and organizational familiarity could strengthen the Rangers bullpen without requiring a blockbuster trade.
