High strikeout totals and a quest for roster flexibility could force the Texas Rangers to swap Jake Burger’s raw power for internal alternatives like Justin Foscue.
The Texas Rangers will look to adjust their roster after missing the postseason for a third consecutive year. The exact changes they intend to make remain uncertain.
Texas will likely operate under the same financial restrictions it faced last offseason, when president of baseball operations Chris Young needed to reduce payroll.
Those limitations could lead Young to trade expensive players or release arbitration-eligible players who no longer fit what the Rangers are attempting to build.
Several factors will determine who returns in 2027. Financial commitments will matter, but performance will also influence each decision.
The Rangers want to create a more versatile lineup, making positional flexibility another consideration. Texas must also evaluate whether it has MLB-ready players in the minor leagues who can replace more expensive veterans.
Jake Burger is one player whose future could become uncertain.
Why Burger could get traded by Rangers
Trading a player with two remaining years of arbitration eligibility would be unusual. However, Burger may no longer fit the offense as well as the Rangers believed he would when they acquired him before the 2025 season.
Burger provided considerable power, finishing with 28 home runs and 90 RBIs in 155 games.
However, he hit only .228 and struck out 167 times. The strikeout total represented the highest mark of his career.
Burger’s power and two remaining years of team control should make him attractive to teams seeking an affordable first baseman capable of hitting home runs.
Texas may not receive a substantial return in a trade, but the organization possesses several players capable of handling Burger’s position.
Justin Foscue is one possible replacement. He developed into an excellent option against left-handed pitching while working as a designated hitter.
That internal alternative could make the Rangers more comfortable moving Burger, especially if doing so creates additional roster flexibility or reduces future payroll obligations.
Burger’s upside
Burger has the ability to change a game with one swing. His power forces pitchers to treat every plate appearance carefully, particularly when runners are in scoring position.
He also brings the physical strength required to drive mistakes to every part of the field. That ability carries value for teams lacking affordable power in the middle of their lineup.
However, Burger must improve his contact rate and become more adaptable against different pitching styles. Power loses some of its impact when strikeouts repeatedly prevent productive contact.
His willingness to accept different lineup positions and defensive responsibilities could strengthen his value. Burger can also help a younger offense by demonstrating the preparation required to handle the demands of a full MLB season.
Texas must determine whether his power outweighs the limitations in his offensive profile. Burger remains useful, but Foscue’s emergence and the Rangers’ need for greater versatility could make a trade beneficial for both sides.
