Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung hit his first career grand slam on Sunday in the first inning against the New York Yankees.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Sunday afternoon's matchup with the New York Yankees after Josh Jung mashed a grand slam, the first of his career.
Robbie Grossman started the uprising by drawing a walk off of Yankees starter Nestor Cortes. Nathaniel Lowe followed with another walk.
Adolis Garcia notched a single to right field that loaded the bases.
That brought up Jung with the bases loaded.
The third baseman then put a 2-2 Cortes 78.4-mph sweeper into the right field stands to clear the bases and make it 4-0.
Jung's grand slam, his sixth home run of the season, traveled 368 feet, came off the bat at 101.1 mph and pushed his RBI total to 20.
Jung's hit also snapped a 0-for-7 stretch that included four strikeouts over the last three games. He came into the game leading American League rookies in slugging percentage (.458), extra-base hits (9) and total bases (44).
The grand slam also snapped an impressive streak for Cortes. The left-hander had allowed three-or-fewer runs in each of his last 17 starts, with was tied for the fourth-longest streak for a Yankees pitcher since 1913 (when earned runs became an official stat.)
