BOSTON -- Not even Mother Nature can stop the red-hot Boston Red Sox as they defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 in game one of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader. With the win, Boston improved to a season-best four games over .500 (52-48) and tied the 1946 Red Sox for the longest winning streak in franchise history at 15 straight. 

Rookie left-hander Jake Bennett got the start for Boston, dancing in and out of trouble for much of his 5.2 innings of work, allowing nine hits. But as the 25-year-old has done since being recalled on June 10, he limited the damage, allowing only three earned runs. After earning the win, Bennett became the fifth starter in Red Sox history to earn a winning decision in five consecutive starts within the first 10 starts of his career, and the first since Aaron Sele accomplished the feat in 1993. 

Offensively, it was a total team effort from the Red Sox lineup, who came out of the gates firing, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning against Orioles starter Dean Kremer, thanks in part to a two-RBI single off the bat of third baseman Caleb Durbin and a triple from left fielder Jarren Duran.

Baltimore answered back in the top half of the third inning. After first baseman Pete Alonso hit a one-out ground-rule double, the Orioles took advantage of a fly ball off the bat of former Boston outfielder Tyler O'Neill that Gold Glove center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela lost in the sun, allowing Alonso to score and cutting the Boston lead to three, 4-1.  

As they have for the duration of the winning streak though, the Red Sox had an immediate answer, as it was Duran again providing the Red Sox with a key insurance run. He hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Durbin and extend the lead back to four at 5-1.

Nine-time All-Star Aroldis Chapman locked down his 23rd save of the season in the win, the 390th of his career. With the save, Chapman tied Red Sox legend and Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley for the ninth most saves in Major League history. 

With the win, the Red Sox have won 20 of their last 22 games, marking the fourth time in franchise history the team has gone 20-2 over a 22-game stretch, joining the 2004, 1995, and 1988 Red Sox. Boston is also 23-5 in its last 28 games, the first time the team has achieved the mark since the 2018 World Series-winning season. 

Finally, Boston now owns the second-longest winning streak in Major League history by a team that was 11 or more games under .500 at the start of the streak, trailing only the 1916 New York Giants, who won 17 straight games. 

The 2026 Red Sox will look to sweep their fifth consecutive series and stand alone in the pantheon of Boston baseball history in game two of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Orioles. Eduardo Rivera (0-0, 2.89 ERA) will get the start for Boston opposite Kyle Bradish (6-9, 3.61 ERA) for Baltimore. First pitch from Fenway is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
