After spending just over two weeks on the injured list, the Boston Red Sox have brought back Sonny Gray.

The Boston Red Sox got some welcome news ahead of Wednesday night's series finale in Detroit against the Tigers, activating starter Sonny Gray off the 15-day injured list to get the start as the Red Sox go for the sweep of the American League Central foes.

Gray was placed on the injured list on April 21 after departing his Marathon Monday start after just 2.2 innings with a right hamstring strain. Despite exiting the start early, Gray still met with the media, explaining that the injury was something that he had dealt with before, "I felt a grab in my right hamstring, something that I had felt before, in the moment I kinda knew what it was was it," Gray said. "2022, 2024, I've dealt with it for a while, just managed it... It just happens every now and then," he continued.

Gray threw a bullpen in Detroit on Monday, where he responded well. Now, after the minimum 15-day stay on the IL, he'll return to the active roster to take the mound on Wednesday.

Gray's return comes at the perfect time for the Red Sox rotation, which has seen its pitching depth all but depleted in recent weeks, first with ace Garrett Crochet going down with a shoulder injury, followed by Ranger Suarez departing his most recent start on Sunday afternoon with a tight hamstring. Overall, Boston has four starters on their major league injured list, along with left-handed prospect Tyler Uberstein, who made his major league debut in April and was placed on the Triple-A injured list with a shoulder injury.

Gray has made five starts for the Red Sox in 2026, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 23 hits across 23 innings pitched. He has a record of 2-1 and an ERA of 4.30.

After making his major league debut in a clean inning of work on Tuesday night, reliever Alec Gamboa was optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make room on the active roster for Gray.

In other Red Sox injury news

After exiting Monday night's 5-4 win over the Tigers with a right-hand injury, Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony returned to Boston to see a hand specialist, where he received some relatively good news. According to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo, Anthony will avoid the injured list with a wrist sprain; he is considered day-to-day.

Reliever Justin Slaten made his second rehab appearance on Wednesday morning with Triple-A Worcester. Slaten allowed one hit with two strikeouts while walking one in a scoreless inning of work. According to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier, Slaten feels ready to return to the big league club, but it is up to the team to decide when to activate him.

The Red Sox will go for their first series sweep of the season on Wednesday night in Detroit. First pitch from Comerica Park set for 6:40 p.m. ET.
