The Boston Red Sox already have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball. However, aside from a historic 32-5 stretch, their lineup was a significant step behind the pitching staff and was ultimately to blame for the team's second consecutive Wild Card exit. It's a particularly weak free agent class of hitters, making the top names all the more valuable. However, as the Red Sox seek the lineup upgrades they desperately need, could Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki emerge as a target?

About Suzuki

The 32-year-old outfielder came to the United States ahead of the 2022 season after nine seasons with the Hiroshima Carp of Japan's NPB, signing a five-year, $85-million deal with Chicago. While he ultimately wound up on the North Side, it is worth noting that the Red Sox were heavily linked to Suzuki during his initial trip in free agency.

In 143 games in 2026, Suzuki hit .270/.368/.473/.841 with 26 home runs, 31 doubles, driving in 86 runs. In five seasons with Chicago, Suzuki has become one of baseball's more consistent bats, posting a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 120 or higher in each of the last four seasons. Overall, the 32-year-old hit .269/.351/.472/.823 with 142 doubles, 113 home runs, and 382 RBI in 675 games with the Cubs.

Defensively, the right fielder is coming off his best season, posting a career-high 14 defensive runs saved, four outs above average, and a fielding run value of seven, en route to his first Gold Glove nomination. However, over 4,064.1 innings in the outfield, Suzuki profiles as more of an average fielder, posting eight defensive runs saved, -2 outs above average, and a -1 fielding run value.

How would Suzuki fit in Boston?

The Red Sox have a well-documented outfield logjam that has complicated roster construction over the last two seasons. However, they also have a massive need for a consistent designated hitter. With Gold Glove winners Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu seemingly locked into center and right fields, Suzuki could spell Roman Anthony in left or Abreu in right, while serving as the full-time DH.

While Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow wasn't with the organization during its 2022 pursuit of Suzuki, several influential voices remain with the team. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, "one source with knowledge of Boston’s thinking said recently that Suzuki has big fans in the organization."

What would Suzuki's market look like?

In a weak free-agent class, the top bats available will likely have multiple big-market suitors. Spotrac projects Suzuki will land a four-year, $110-million contract, while Jim Bowden of The Athletic projects a five-year, $120-million deal.

However, the Red Sox face a much more precarious financial situation ahead of the looming lockout. With $268 million already committed to the 2027 roster, they will likely need to free up money before making any major additions.

Beyond the financial implications, Suzuki will undoubtedly receive a qualifying offer, which would cost Boston a second- and fifth-round pick in the 2027 MLB Draft and $1 million in international signing bonus pool space. After signing All-Star starter Ranger Suarez, whom the Philadelphia Phillies qualified in 2025, it's unclear whether Breslow would be willing to sacrifice the draft-pick compensation needed to land Suzuki, especially after trades have depleted the Boston farm system.

Free agency officially begins five days after the World Series ends.
