Ahead of the Boston Red Sox series opener at Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, interim manager Chad Tracy met with the media and provided updates on a number of injured Red Sox players. 

Here’s what you need to know: 

All eyes were on the All-Star first baseman after Thursday night’s win over the Texas Rangers. Contreras exited the game in the eighth inning after being hit by a pitch on the right-hand. According to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo, Contreras told reporters after the game that the injury “felt” like a fracture. While initial X-Rays were negative, as the team learned with infielder Curtis Mead, that doesn’t mean Contreras was completely out of the woods yet. According to MLB.com’s Ian Browne, the team is waiting for swelling in the 34-year-old’s hand to subside before testing his grip strength to determine if additional testing is needed. 

Contreras is out of the lineup for Friday’s series opener. 

Crochet threw a 30-pitch up-and-down bullpen session on Tuesday back at Fenway Park, representing the most labor-intensive of the four throwing sessions the 27-year-old has done since restarting a throwing progression Aug. 3. According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, Crochet will throw another side session on Saturday as he continues to work his way back from left shoulder inflammation that has kept him out since April 29. 

After turning to Garrett Whitlock to lock down Thursday’s win, Tracy told reporters, including Cotillo, that Chapman was unavailable with LAT tightness. According to Bradford, Chapman said the injury popped up ahead of Tuesday’s series opener in Texas and that he wasn’t concerned about the injury, saying the latest he would return to the mound would be during the team’s upcoming home stand, beginning on Tuesday night, if he doesn’t make an appearance in Tampa.  

After landing on the injured list on Sept. 1 with right shoulder inflammation. The 35-year-old flamethrower was expected to be activated when he was first eligible, ahead of Wednesday’s game in Texas. However, after experiencing lower back tightness, the team delayed his activation. According to Bradford, Guerrero “felt fine” after throwing 20 pitches off the mound on Friday afternoon. However, it still remains unclear when he may be activated. 

The 32-year-old outfielder landed on the injured list last Friday with a “right foot ligament injury” after getting it caught in the grates along the center field wall in the Sept. 8 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. As Bradford noted, White has been diagnosed with a ligament tear, likely ending his season. 

White's injury seems to open the door for Spring Training standout Braiden Ward to join the Red Sox as a fourth outfielder/pinch runner in the playoffs.  

The Red Sox will look to carry the momentum from Thursday’s come-from-behind win into the final road series of the year against the Rays. Ranger Suarez (7-4, 3.33 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox opposite Ian Seymour (9-6, 4.27 ERA) for the Rays. First pitch from Tropicana Field is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
