It’s been 14 months since the Boston Red Sox made the shocking decision to trade star designated hitter Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for starter Kyle Harrison and a pair of prospects, outfielder James Tibbs III and pitcher Jose Bello. After a series of transactions in the year since the trade of Devers, Bello is the lone player included in the deal still with the Red Sox organization. 

After spending the first five months of the season in Single-A Salem, the 21-year-old right-hander is being promoted to High-A Greenville, joining the Drive for the final seven games of the High-A season. 

It’s been an odd season for Bello as he posted a 4.34 ERA in 66.1 innings across 18 appearances for the RidgeYaks. Despite the solid surface stats, advanced metrics suggest Bello benefited from some good luck throughout the season, as he posted a fielding-independent pitching (FIP) of 5.53. 

The 21-year-old struggled to miss bats in Salem, generating whiffs on just 20.5 percent of pitches, a mark that ranks in the ninth percentile among Single-A pitchers. In addition to his failure to miss bats, he’s also struggled to get batters to chase pitches outside of the zone with a 26.5 percent chase rate, which, when added all together, results in a paltry 16.6 percent strikeout rate. Bello is allowing an incredibly high zone contact rate of 89.3 percent, which falls in the 12th percentile. However, a 51.8 percent ground ball rate has helped him limit the damage. 

Bello is currently unranked in SoxProspects.com’s organizational top 60. According to SoxProspects, Bello is an “Intriguing right-hander whose career got off to a slow start, but has shown solid stuff and bat-missing ability in the complex leagues. Still learning how to pitch. Arsenal and size point towards the bullpen long-term.”

After winning the International League Player of the Month award for July, former Red Sox top prospect Kristian Campbell got off to a scorching-hot start to August, hitting .286/.392/.500/.892 in 12 games of the month. However, in the eight games since the solid start, Campbell is hitting just .115/.258/.154/.412. Overall, the 24-year-old is hitting .243/.372/.346/.718 in 103 games with Worcester. 

After being promoted to Double-A Portland on Aug. 17, Red Sox No. 2 prospect Justin Gonzales has wasted no time getting adjusted to the new level. In his first seven games with Portland, the 19-year-old is hitting .393/.500/.714/1.214 with two home runs, one double and one triple, while driving in six. 

Meanwhile, back in Boston, the Red Sox are 74-61 and in third place in the American League East.
