It has been a year full of coaching staff changes for the Boston Red Sox. After firing Alex Cora, the third-winningest manager in franchise history, and six members of his major league coaching staff in April, the team scrambled to rebuild its staff, naming then-Triple-A manager Chad Tracy interim manager. Beyond Tracy, the team elevated several minor-league staff members to major-league roles in the interim, including Double-A manager Chad Epperson and minor-league defensive coordinator Pablo Cabrera, who became interim third-base coach and interim first-base coach, respectively.
Staff changes continued in recent weeks as the team reportedly moved both Epperson and Cabrera back to minor league roles. Epperson, the winningest manager in Portland Sea Dogs history, will head to Worcester as Triple-A manager. Cabrera will return to his role as minor league defensive coordinator. Tracy is now the manager full-time for the Red Sox.
The team had two open base coach positions and an opening for an outfield coordinator, formerly held by third-base coach Kyle Hudson, who was fired alongside Cora and Cabrera. According to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart, Boston has found its next outfield instructor, as the team will reportedly hire Houston Astros major-league field coordinator and outfield coach Jason Bell. Tim Healey of the Boston Globe reports that Bell and the Red Sox are still working out potential additional responsibilities.
About Bell
Feb 18, 2026; West Palm Beach, FL, USA; Houston Astros major league field coordinator Jason Bell (35) poses for a photo during media day at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches. Sam Navarro-Imagn ImagesAfter Tommy John surgery cut his playing career short, Bell served in multiple collegiate roles, including director of baseball operations at Ohio University and pitching coach at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Bell joined the Astros organization in 2017, serving as a developmental coach in Single-A, a manager at the now-defunct Low-A level, and as a minor league field coordinator. Bell joined Houston's major league staff in 2024 as the outfield coach and major league field coordinator.
After Houston made several changes to its coaching staff, moving on from manager Joe Espada, Bell was one of a few coaches who were expected to remain with the team. Instead, the 36-year-old will head to Boston to join Tracy's staff.
Fitting the mold
The Red Sox fired Cora, in part because they weren't happy with player development at the major-league level. That's why they looked within their own system for interim coaches. Bell's extensive history of working in the minor leagues and helping develop players is similar to Tracy's or Epperson's.
