After splitting Saturday’s doubleheader, the Boston Red Sox will look to salvage a series split in Sunday’s finale against the Yankees in the Bronx. However, ahead of the finale, the Boston offense will reportedly get a major boost as, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the team is expected to activate outfielder Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story off the injured list.

The 22-year-old outfielder has been out of the lineup since exiting the Red Sox’ May 4 win in Detroit after awkwardly fouling off a pitch in the first inning, tearing a ligament in his right ring finger. After initially thinking he would miss only a couple of games, Anthony has wound up missing 100 games, assuming he will be in the lineup on Sunday. 

After beginning a swing progression on July 30, Anthony progressed quickly, setting out on a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Aug. 18, before joining Triple-A Worcester a week later to continue the assignment. Overall, Anthony hit the ball incredibly well with both Portland and Worcester, going 7-for-25 with two home runs and seven RBI, while walking four times to eight strikeouts across eight games. 

Anthony has been on a long, dramatic road to recovery, as he was initially expected to avoid an injured list stint before ultimately landing on the 10-day IL on May 7 with what was initially diagnosed as a right wrist sprain. However, as Anthony remained out of the lineup, questions began to arise about the nature of the injury. After reports surfaced that the 22-year-old had torn a ligament in his finger rather than spraining it, as the team had maintained, Anthony clarified that he had, in fact, suffered a torn ligament in his right ring finger. As injuries continued to mount within the major league roster, the Red Sox made the decision to transfer Anthony’s recovery to the team’s spring training facilities in Ft. Myers until he was ready to join an affiliate. 

After entering the season as one of the trendy picks to take home the American League Most Valuable Player, it was a relatively disappointing start to the season for the former top-rated prospect in the sport. In 30 games before landing on the injured list, Anthony hit just .229/.354/.321/.675 with only one home run, five doubles and five RBI. Despite the rough surface stats, advanced metrics measuring quality of contact suggest Anthony was on the cusp of breaking out at the plate. 

Story has been on the injured list since May 16 after undergoing surgery to treat a sports hernia suffered during the Red Sox' April series in Baltimore. In 41 games before going down with the hernia, Story struggled at the plate, hitting .206/.244/.303/.547 with a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 46, which ranked 167 out of 171 qualified batters. He also struggled defensively, making six errors, which at the time was the fifth-most in baseball, while his outs above average of -3 ranked in the 10th percentile of all shortstops. 

He joined Worcester on Aug. 16 for a lengthy rehab assignment where he struggled at the plate in 10 games, going 6-for-35 with only one extra-base hit, a double, while striking out 30.5 percent of the time.

As noted by Cotillo, the Red Sox are still working through the corresponding moves. 

With the season series and a potential playoff tiebreaker on the line, the Red Sox will send All-Star left-hander Ranger Suarez (5-3, 3.35 ERA) to the mound opposite Will Warren (8-6, 4.39 ERA) for New York in Sunday's series finale from Yankee Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET.
