Payton Tolle’s incredible rookie season rolls on as he dominates the Baltimore Orioles en route to a sweep.
The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to complete the four-game sweep and effectively end Baltimore’s playoff hopes. Rookie left-hander Payton Tolle got the start for the Red Sox and continued his incredible rookie campaign, once again making franchise history en route to the win.
Tolle dominated Baltimore for six innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits, while striking out 12 en route to his ninth win of the season. After allowing a pair of doubles in the first inning to give the Orioles an early 1-0 lead, Tolle allowed only two hits while striking out 10 over his final five innings of work.

Jamie Sabau-Imagn ImagesThe double-digit strikeout performance from Tolle marks the third time the 23-year-old lefty has eclipsed the 10-strikeout mark, which, according to Red Sox Nation Stats on Twitter/X, makes him the first Boston starter under 24-years-old to make three starts with 11 or more strikeouts in a single season since Roger Clemens in 1986. Additionally, per Justin Havens of the ‘Baseball Is Dead’ Podcast, Tolle is the first left-handed pitcher in his age-23 season or younger to make three starts in which they allowed one or fewer runs, walked one or fewer batters, and recorded 11 or more strikeouts in major league history.
As noted by JP Long on Twitter/X, prior to the 2026 season, there had been only three outings by a pitcher 23 years old or younger with more than 10 strikeouts and fewer than 5 baserunners allowed, two by Smoky Joe Wood and one by Roger Clemens, a feat that Tolle has achieved himself in 2026.
Overall, Tolle has established himself as one of the best young starters in baseball, posting a 3.15 ERA in 137 innings pitched across 24 starts. Tolle ranks in the top 10 among all qualified rookie starters in ERA (3.15, 5th), strikeouts per nine innings (10.45, 2nd), walks per nine innings (2.43, 6th) and Fangraphs wins above replacement (3.7, 2nd).
A star in the making

Brian Fluharty-Imagn ImagesBeyond becoming one of the sport's best young pitchers, Tolle has the ‘it’ factor that creates stars not only in Boston but across sports. The 23-year-old lives by a motto from his late mother: “Be a Tigger, not an Eeyore.” Tolle has become known for his on-field antics, including doing a push-up on the mound after slipping on the mound in Sunday’s win or hugging a Mariners baserunner along the first baseline after making the play on a weakly hit ground ball.
In an era where Major League Baseball has made a concerted effort to appeal to a younger audience built on players’ personalities, Tolle is the exact type of player the league loves to promote.
Up next for the Sox
The Red Sox head home for a six-game home stand, beginning with a Labor Day Monday matinee that kicks off a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels. Brayan Bello (5-7, 5.07 ERA) will make his first traditional start since June 4 for Boston opposite Grayson Rodriguez (4-6, 6.03 ERA) for Los Angeles. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET.
