If you build it, they will come. The Red Sox are set to take on the Royals at the site of a legendary baseball movie.
The third “MLB at Field of Dreams” game took place on Thursday night as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-1 in Dyersville, Iowa, the site of the set for the “Field of Dreams” movie of the 1990s. On Friday afternoon, Major League Baseball announced that the Boston Red Sox will be heading to Iowa in 2027, taking on the Kansas City Royals at the 8,000-seat stadium on Aug. 12.
Of course, the 2027 season has been cast in doubt thanks to the ongoing labor negotiations between the owners and MLB Players’ Union; however, as currently constructed, the Red Sox are scheduled to be in Chicago for a three-game set with the White Sox from Aug. 9-11 before an off day in Kansas City, then opening up a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Now, they’ll head from Chicago to Iowa, taking on Kansas City on the 12th, before having an off day on Friday, Aug. 13, and then resuming the series with the Royals back in Kansas City.

USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect“To have the Red Sox take the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds us why people fall in love with baseball, will be incredibly special,” Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said in a statement released by MLB. “Part of what has allowed baseball to endure for generations is its ability to evolve while still holding onto the traditions, memories and shared experiences that give the game its meaning. We can’t wait to experience that in Dyersville with our players, our fans and baseball fans everywhere,” he continued.
Major League Baseball built a roughly 8,000-seat stadium on the site of the movie, with fences bordering cornfields ahead of the first iteration of the game, a White Sox walk-off victory over the Yankees in 2021. Then, the Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 2022’s edition of the game. After a three-year hiatus, the game returned for Thursday night’s Phillies victory.

In 2019, the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry took the show across the pond, playing two games in London. And in 2022, the Sox and Orioles faced off in Williamsport, Penn. for the annual Little League Classic.

Meanwhile, after salvaging Thursday afternoon’s series finale in Toronto, the Red Sox continue on their seven-game road trip by heading to Pittsburgh for a three-game weekend set with the Pirates. Jake Bennett (7-5, 3.17 ERA) will get the start for Boston in Friday’s series opener at PNC Park. Fellow rookie Bubba Chandler (5-8, 4.26 ERA) will get the start for Pittsburgh.
