According to MLB Network Insider Jon Morosi, Boston Red Sox star outfielder Roman Anthony is under consideration for a late roster addition to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic.
The Americans need another outfielder after learning that Corbin Carroll broke the hamate bone in his hand. He will be sidelined at least 4-6 weeks.
Morosi says that Steven Kwan (Cleveland Guardians), Riley Greene (Detroit Tigers), Tyler Soderstrom (Athletics), James Wood (Washington Nationals), Wyatt Langford (Texas Rangers) and Kyle Stowers (Miami Marlins) are also under consideration.
Team USA enters the tournament with championship goals after falling in the finals of the 2023 WBC. Japan is the defending champion.
The top prospect in baseball at the time of his promotion in 2025, Anthony could quickly turn into one of the best hitters in the entire league. In 257 at-bats last season for the Red Sox, he hit .292 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and four stolen bases. He posted a .396 on-base percentage and a 140 OPS+. Unfortunately, he missed most of September - and the playoffs - with an oblique issue.
At just the age of 21, he figures to help anchor the middle of a Red Sox lineup that is working to contend for its first World Series title since 2018.
If Anthony is ultimately selected and ultimately says yes, he will become the fifth of five projected outfielders on the Opening Day roster to leave for the World Baseball Classic, leaving the Sox very thin at the position.
Jarren Duran (Mexico), Wilyer Abreu (Venezuela), Masataka Yoshida (Japan), and Ceddanne Rafaela (Netherlands) are all playing in the tournament, which begins March 5. Additionally, Nate Eaton, who is trying to make the roster, is playing for Great Britain.
It would give him the opportunity to experience very meaningful baseball at a young age, and to learn from established Team USA stars. That could be valuable for him.
--Garrett Crochet, who finished second in the American League Cy Young voting last season, has been named the team Opening Day starter. No surprise there.
--Youngster Payton Tolle, who is fighting for a roster spot this spring after debuting in 2025, is already hitting 97 mph on the radar gun, per Rob Bradford of WEEI.
--Manager Alex Cora said that Kristian Campbell will work in the outfield this spring, but that they won't forget about the infield possibilities that exist for him. We covered how this announcement affects the roster - and Campbell - moving forward.
--Ranger Suarez credited Walker Buehler with helping him understand how special the Sox organization is. Suarez signed a five-year deal this offseason.
