The Boston Red Sox were swept out of the playoffs by the New York Yankees in embarrassing fashion on Wednesday night. According to Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow, and manager Chad Tracy will meet with the media for the annual end-of-season press conference on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. ET.

Here’s what you should keep an eye out for in the press conference:

Was Breslow behind early hook for starters?

After Tracy's shocking decision to remove both starters, Payton Tolle and Sonny Gray, in the fifth inning of their starts, many have wondered whether the rookie manager was simply following the game plan set by Breslow and the front office. Tracy explained each decision as simply playing the matchups at the point in time.

However, the decision to remove Gray seemed to contradict that explanation. Monday will represent Breslow’s first chance to answer questions about how much say he and the rest of the front office have in in-game managerial decisions.

A seeming disconnect between clubhouse and management

After the season-ending loss, both Gray and All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras spoke out against the decision to remove the veteran right-hander from the game. A new report on Friday morning from MassLive’s Sean McAdam said that many in the clubhouse felt that Tracy, or whoever made that call, had done the team a ”disservice” that “disrespected” not only Gray but the team as a whole.

The trio will have to address that sense of betrayal, especially in light of the long-term commitments the organization made to both Tracy and Breslow just a week earlier.

Off-season plans to bolster the offense

Aside from the dominant 37-game stretch that propelled the Red Sox into the postseason, the Boston offense was among the worst in baseball in 2026. It was a particularly embarrassing final month of the regular season, when the team’s 71 runs scored ranked near the bottom of the league. After posting a weighted runs created plus of 12 (league average is 100) in the playoffs, bolstering the lineup should be Breslow's No. 1 offseason priority.

Will the impending lockout impact how they operate?

A looming black cloud hangs over the entire league as the Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1. With both the owners and the Players’ Union dug in on their positions on a salary cap, a lockout seems all but certain.

Breslow should address how the Red Sox plan to navigate the offseason leading up to the lockout. Will he choose to be more aggressive early in the offseason to improve the team before the labor situation is settled? Or will the team wait to see if there will be salary restrictions and scramble to build their roster after a resolution is reached?

An update on Roman Anthony’s hand

The 22-year-old phenom was removed from the Red Sox postseason roster ahead of Game 2 after an MRI revealed a reaggravation of the torn ligament in his right ring finger, along with several new strains in his right hand. After missing 101 regular-season games and the final game of the wild card loss, how the injury could impact Anthony moving forward will be a major topic of conversation throughout the offseason.

Does the team spend enough?

As always, the Red Sox spending, or lack thereof, is expected to be a major topic of discussion for Kennedy, who serves as the forward-facing member of Fenway Sports Group. According to Spotrac, the Red Sox finished the season 10th in cash spending.

Aside from the reported pursuit of free agent Juan Soto ahead of the 2025 season, Boston has been reluctant to pay major free-agent premiums in recent years.

While Kennedy and Breslow will almost certainly be asked about the financial investment from ownership, it will likely be met with some variation of ‘John Henry is as committed as ever to winning in Boston.’
