The Sox acquired Durbin on Monday, leading to questions about the rest of the roster.

On Monday, the Boston Red Sox acquired versatile infielder Caleb Durbin in a six-player trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Durbin, who was a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year in 2025, can start at either second or third base, bringing solid defense and good baserunning to the organization.

However, his acquisition brings into question how the rest of the roster will work out.

Let's examine the hypothetical scenario where the Red Sox are playing a right-handed pitcher, and remember, each team needs 13 position players.

C: Carlos Narvaez

1B: Willson Contreras

2B: Marcelo Mayer

SS: Trevor Story

3B: Caleb Durbin

LF: Jarren Duran

CF: Ceddanne Rafaela

RF: Wilyer Abreu

DH: Roman Anthony

Bench 1: Connor Wong

Bench 2: Isiah Kiner-Falefa

Bench 3: Masataka Yoshida

Bench 4: ?

About the end-of-roster candidates

Each one of the following players now have less of a chance to make the roster after the Durbin trade.

--Could Romy Gonzalez still make the team and be a platoon partner for Mayer, or is that job going to Kiner-Falefa?

--What about Nate Eaton, who impressed in limited action in 2025?

--What does the future look like for Kristian Campbell, who earned a $60 million extension last season, but seemingly has no spot positionally right now?

--While he's not likely to be healthy at the beginning of the season, is there a plan for Triston Casas when he's finally ready to go?

--Brendan Rogers is a gold glove winner that the Sox just signed to a minor league deal. Does he have any chance at all?

--And if the Red Sox want to keep more than one of these players, are they prepared to trade Duran, Abreu or Yoshida? Could they cut Yoshida outright?

About Durbin

Just 25 years old, Durbin is a long-term asset for the Red Sox as he's under team control through 2031. A right-handed hitter, he hit .256 last season for Milwaukee, popping 11 home runs and driving in 53 runs. He also stole 18 bases as the Brewers compiled the best record in the National League. He was originally drafted by the Braves in 2021 and ended up with the New York Yankees, coming to Milwaukee in the Devin Williams trade before 2025.

News and notes

According to Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Red Sox pitchers Garrett Whitlock, Greg Weissert and Jovani Moran are throwing live BP sessions at spring training on Tuesday. All three are playing in the World Baseball Classic, leading to the early start.
