A busy week down on the farm continued for the Boston Red Sox as veteran utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa joined shortstop Trevor Story on a rehab assignment in Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday night. After landing on the injured list on June 20 with a stress reaction in his left forearm, Kiner-Falefa finally returned to game action, kicking off his rehab assignment by leading off and playing second base as the WooSox took on the Syracuse Mets. 

Here’s what you need to know about his performance: 

The 31-year-old faced off against the Mets No. 2-ranked prospect, left-hander Jonathan Santucci, where he didn’t see much to hit, working a five-pitch walk. Kiner-Falefa advanced to second as Story ripped a 99.8 mph single to right field. He advanced to third as Nate Eaton grounded into a fielder’s choice and Story was thrown out at second base. He was then stranded as Romy Gonzalez grounded into an inning-ending double play. 

With Worcester trailing 3-0 in the top of the third inning, Kiner-Falefa stepped to the plate for his second look at Santucci with a man on first and nobody out. After falling behind 1-2 in the count, he fouled off a fastball on the outside corner before chasing a slider that was bounced in, striking out for the first out of the inning. 

Worcester mounted a big comeback in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the Syracuse lead to two at 5-3 when Kiner-Falefa stepped to the plate with a man on second and nobody out. After falling behind in the count 1-2, he hit a lopping pop fly to right field, falling down for a single. He came around to score on a three-run home run off the bat of Gonzalez as Worcester took a 7-5 lead. 

Kiner-Falefa’s fourth and final plate appearance of the day came in the top of the sixth inning, when he lazily flied out to right field on a splitter just below the zone. The veteran infielder played another two innings defensively before being pinch-hit for by Red Sox No. 21 prospect Mikey Romero. 

Story made his third and possibly final appearance on his rehab assignment, batting second behind Kiner-Falefa and playing shortstop. The 33-year-old went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while playing six innings at short. Overall, Story has gone 3-for-9 with one RBI. He’ll reconvene with the Red Sox medical staff in Boston on Thursday before potentially being activated for Friday’s series opener against the San Francisco Giants at Fenway Park. 

After a dominant first game with Double-A Portland, left fielder Roman Anthony was off on Wednesday night. Tracy told reporters ahead of Wednesday afternoon’s loss to the Diamondbacks that the 22-year-old would return to the Portland lineup on Thursday playing left field, and again on Friday serving as the designated hitter. 

After an off day on Thursday, Boston will look to make it two series wins in a row when they welcome Rafael Devers and the San Francisco Giants to Fenway Park for a three-game weekend set. Sonny Gray (15-3, 2.65 ERA) will get the start for the Red Sox while the Giants have yet to name their starter. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
