The Boston Red Sox got some disappointing news on the injury front ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates as the team placed reliever Justin Slaten on the 15-day injured list with right elbow soreness and designated hitter Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain. However, it wasn't all bad news for the Sox as veteran shortstop Trevor Story made his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Worcester as he works his way back from surgery to correct a sports hernia. 

The 33-year-old got the start at shortstop for the WooSox, batting second against the Buffalo Bison, the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Story's first at-bat came in the home half of the first inning against Toronto's newly acquired Spencer Arrighetti. He worked a nine-pitch at-bat before launching a 94.5 mph fly ball to center field for the second out of the inning. 

Story's second, and final, at-bat of the outing came in the top of the fourth with Worcester trailing 9-0 and Arrighetti still on the bump. After seeing nine pitches in his first at-bat, Story was more aggressive in his second, jumping on a second-pitch sinker from the Bison starter, ripping it 98.6 mph in between the shortstop and third baseman for a single. Story came around to score on a home run hit by Red Sox No. 21-ranked prospect, third baseman Mikey Romero. 

Defensively, Story had only one opportunity to field his position, catching a looping line drive in the top of the second inning before being lifted in favor of Tsung-Che Cheng in the top of the fifth inning. 

Story has been out of the lineup since May 16, so he'll likely need several more games before providing some much-needed reinforcements to a Red Sox team that has lost six of their last 10 entering Sunday's finale in Pittsburgh. 

In addition to Story, the Red Sox have a number of key pieces working their way back from injuries in the next week. Tracy told reporters ahead of Saturday night's win over the Pirates that outfielder Roman Anthony, who has been out of the lineup since May 5 after tearing a ligament in his right ring finger, will make his long-awaited rehab assignment beginning on Tuesday with Double-A Portland. 

Injured infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who has been out since June 20 with a stress reaction in the left forearm, will join Story in Worcester beginning on Wednesday. 

The Red Sox are 66-57 and in third place in the American League East. They currently hold the second wild card spot in the American League playoff picture.
