Even though he's 33 years old and even though he's got a significant injury history, Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story says he has no interest in a reduced workload in 2026.
Story made the comments to reporters, including Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald, on Friday morning at spring training:
“I understand the question and understand kind of the load management style of it, but yeah for me, I still feel as strong as I have at any time in my career. … I think it's a standard to be set for kind of the young guys too, like you don't really take days off.”
A 10-year veteran of the Colorado Rockies and Red Sox, Story is headed into his fifth season with Boston. A career .265 hitter, he had a big bounce back campaign a year ago, hitting .263 with 25 homers, 96 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. Always a good defender, it was also his most home runs since 2019 with Colorado.
In addition to his homers, he added 29 doubles, his most since 2021.
Story signed a six-year contract with Boston before the 2022 season but had an opt-out this offseason that he chose not to exercise. He missed most of 2022-24 with injury.
Willson Contreras is set to play first base, while second and third are up for grabs. Caleb Durbin and Marcelo Mayer figure to be the starters at each of those spots, but it's not determined yet where each one will play. Isiah Kiner-Falefa could serve as a platoon partner for Mayer, and there's a chance that Romy Gonzalez could be in the mix as well.
--Boston is sending five of its top six outfield options to the World Baseball Classic and it could be all six if Roman Anthony ends up joining Team USA. He is a candidate to replace the injured Corbin Carroll, who is out after fracturing his hamate bone.
--Speaking of hamate bones, Baltimore Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday is also out with a hamate bone injury.
--The Toronto Blue Jays acquired slugging outfielder Jesus Sanchez in a deal with the Houston Astros on Friday morning.
--Speaking on Thursday, new Red Sox hurler Sonny Gray said that he believes this starting rotation is as good as any group he's ever been a part of.
