Freeland Becomes Rockies' Nominee for Clemente Award

Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland has been named as a nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, given to a player who has shown much support for his own community.

The award is named for late Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Clemente, who died in a plane crash while taking supplies to his home nation of Nicaragua. Nicaragua had just suffered a devastating earthquake in 1973.

Officially, the award recognizes players for outstanding character, community involvement, and a level of philanthropy that spreads both on and off the baseball diamond.
