The Colorado Rockies will wave goodbye to Coors Field until next spring with one more game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Colorado Rockies are set to conclude their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday at Coors Field in Denver, and for fans of the former, this will be the last chance to catch a home game this season.
Nothing has come easy for the Rockies or their fans in what turned into another 100-loss season. Still, there is something bittersweet about knowing this is the last time to see your favorite team until next spring.
Perhaps Colorado can go out on a winning note and play spoiler to the Diamondbacks, whose playoff hopes are just barely hanging on to the chance of placing third in the National League Wild Card race. Let’s identify the start time, who will be on the mound and one burning question for the game:
Start time and pitching matchup
The Rockies will host Arizona at 1:10 p.m. MT. For Colorado, this will also be a chance to avoid the sweep.
Taking the mound for the Rockies is Tanner Gordon, the 28-year-old left-hander who is in his third MLB season. For Gordon, the results of the year have been unkind, which has also been the case for the pitching staff at large.
This season, Gordon has made 23 appearances on the mound, 11 of which he started. Over that span, he has a 1-5 record with a 6.01 ERA — ouch.
Again, Gordon’s struggles are not exclusive to him. The Rockies’ pitching staff has been egregious this year. Of the regular starters, only Tomoyuki Sugano has a winning record, and none of them have an ERA below 5.00.
At this point, there is nothing to lose except for the game, and all Gordon can do is do his best. He will be facing Eduardo Rodriguez, who is having a much stronger season.
Rodriguez, the 33-year-old All-Star southpaw, makes it a battle of the left-handers as he enters Thursday’s contest with a 15-7 record and a 2.89 ERA over 31 starts.
Rodriguez will be trying to bounce back from an ugly outing against the New York Yankees in which he allowed seven earned runs and four walks across four innings of work. The Rockies’ batting order will have to be prepared for the best version of Rodriguez as he tries to keep his team’s postseason hopes alive.
One burning question: can Goodman reach 40?
Catcher Hunter Goodman has been the star of the show for the Rockies this season, and he has the chance to cap off a strong individual year with one more accomplishment.
Even better, he can do it in front of the fans at home.
Currently, Goodman has 39 home runs, which is already a career high. He has four games left in the season to reach No. 40, but doing it at home would be more special.
