The Colorado Rockies really do need their starting pitchers to perform at a much higher level if the ballclub is going to avoid another 100-loss season.
Maybe Mason Adams can provide a tonic for the Colorado Rockies' pitching staff on Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
Adams, Colorado's No. 20 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, will make his major-league debut on the road. Adams was picked up by the Rockies in an August trade that sent Brendan Doyle to the Chicago White Sox.
He underwent Tommy John surgery back in 2025, taking him out for a full season. But Adams came back with a roar this season, playing at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels of the White Sox's organization. Reportedly, Adams relies on a four-seam fastball, sinker, slider, and curveball.
Can Adams deliver on Tuesday night?
So, the question remains: Can he give the Rockies' pitching crew a pick-me-up?
That's a heavy load for a young pitcher to take to the mound. Still, he's got a chance to show his pitching arsenal against the Nationals.
Besides Adams, a right-handed pitcher, Tanner Gordon and Gabriel Hughes will start for the Rockies in Wednesday night's and Thursday's day game, respectively. The Nationals will send out Andrew Alvarez on Tuesday night, a starter to be determined on Wednesday, and Jake Irvin on Thursday.

Pitching staff ERA is awful
And, well, don't look at the Colorado pitchers' ERAs. They are not good and reflective of an overall pattern of a lack of solid pitching, especially from the starters. Too many times, Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer has had to go to the mound in the third or fourth innings and pull a starter.
He then looks to the bullpen to keep a game close, only to see relievers unable to keep a game close at all.
Ballclubs look to patch up areas that were problematic in a previous season. Well, there's no other way around it. Colorado has to do whatever it needs to do around all aspects of their pitching program.
When it comes to looking at what the Rockies did on their last road trip, the team went 5-4. It was their second winning road trip this season. Also, it was Colorado's first winning road trip of at least nine or more games since 2021.
The Rockies need to find a little road trip magic right now. That seven-game losing streak does not look pretty, so Colorado has some work to do.
