The Colorado Rockies were routed by the New York Yankees on Thursday as the latter completed a convincing sweep.

The Colorado Rockies were swept by the New York Yankees in ugly fashion, losing 10-3 on Thursday at Yankee Stadium.

The loss is Colorado's fourth in a row. What went wrong?

An early deficit

Right-hander Ryan Feltner got the starting nod for the Rockies on Thursday, and his latest outing was another footnote in a difficult season for him.

When Feltner took the mound in the bottom of the first inning, he gave up a leadoff single to Ben Rice, but after securing two outs, it seemed as if he would get out of the inning. However, Luis Garcia Jr. made him pay with a two-run home run.

The Rockies responded with a home run as well, thanks to Kyle Karros, who hit a solo shot to left field, but New York would not let momentum build for the visitors.

In the bottom of the second, the Yankees got after Feltner again. It began with Feltner giving up another leadoff single before walking Austin Wells and allowing an RBI single to Anthony Volpe. Cody Bellinger eventually followed suit with a sacrifice fly RBI, and it put Colorado behind 4-1.

For the Rockies, the worst was yet to come.

A brutal seventh inning

With opportunities to get back into the game running thin, Colorado put another run on the board in the top of the seventh inning, resulting from an RBI triple by Jake McCarthy.

McCarthy’s triple brought the Rockies within two runs, and that is as close as they would get. In the bottom of the inning, New York blew the game open.

Reliever Zach Agnos, who took over for Feltner in the bottom of the sixth inning, took the mound again in the seventh, and his return marked the beginning of a disaster.

Agnos opened the frame by giving up a leadoff double to Bellinger before walking Jasson Dominguez. Bellinger and Dominguez followed up by putting additional pressure on Agnos and Colorado’s defense with a double steal.

With runners in scoring position, Agnos got Garcia Jr. out but allowed a two-RBI single to Spencer Jones. Agnos notched a strikeout, but after walking Ryan McMahon, his evening was done.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer went to his bullpen again, this time to put Jimmy Herget on the mound. But Herget’s presence only made things worse when he walked Wells, loading the bases for the Yankees.

Then, Volpe stepped back up to the plate, and his bat became the dagger when he drove a pitch over the right-field wall for a grand slam, marking the second day in a row that a grand slam helped New York break away. Colorado scored again in the eighth, but it did not matter.

Thursday marked the Rockies’ 91st loss of the season. Next, they will travel to Detroit to face the Tigers on Friday.
