George Lombard Jr.'s first career grand slam propels New York Yankees to another win over the Colorado Rockies.

Entering Wednesday night's game at Yankee Stadium, the Colorado Rockies probably were hoping that they could snag a win over the New York Yankees. The Yankees, though, lived up to their Bronx Bombers moniker.

Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano gave up a solo home run to New York's Luis García Jr. and a grand slam to George Lombard Jr. That proved to be enough as the Yankees defeated the Rockies 6-1.

Right now, Colorado is going in the wrong direction to avoid that 100-loss season they don't want to have at all. The Rockies, after this defeat, will need to go 8-9 over their final games if they don't want to end up with a century mark of losses.

Norby homers for Rockies

Connor Norby's fifth-inning solo home run provided Colorado with its lone run.

Cody Bellinger's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the final blow as New York was able to play "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra after the last out was recorded.

In the fifth inning, after Norby's home run, Colorado put itself in a good position to score more runs. Zac Veen singled to Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge, and Jake McCarthy followed up with another single. That put runners at first and third base, with Cole Carrigg coming to the plate.

Carrigg, though, grounded into a 3-6-1 double play, putting the stops on a threat there for the Rockies.

Karros hits a triple late

With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Colorado third baseman Kyle Karros connected for his third triple this season. Brett Sullivan, though, grounded out to end that potential scoring threat.

Sugano falls to 12-9 this season. He went six innings, giving up four hits, five earned runs, walked three, struck out five, and surrendered two home runs. Reliever Juan Mejia worked the final two innings, giving up one earned run in his outing.

Yankees starter Will Warren goes to 10-6 overall after picking up the victory. He worked six innings, gave up four hits, one earned run, walked two, struck out eight, and surrendered a home run as well. Three Yankees relievers followed and just allowed one hit over the final three innings.

With the loss, the Rockies are 55-90 this season. It's getting a bit tight in the loss column for Colorado.

This three-game series in the Bronx wraps up on Thursday night.
