A tough first few months set the Colorado Rockies off to a rough start in the 2026 MLB season. With the MLB All-Star break arriving now, it's a good time to hit the reset button.
The hopes of the Colorado Rockies at the start of the season were around getting off to a better start in 2026. Also, this is the first Rockies team under the new guidance of president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta.
Colorado wanted to do something different than showing up like last season's team.
In looking at how March/April/May showed up record-wise, then Rockies fans probably thought it was going to be another long season.
At this point, of course, Colorado is in last place in the National League West Division. The team had a chance to make a strong run at fourth place before the All-Star break, but that didn't happen. They lost three out of four games in a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
A bunch of comeback heroes
In the past couple of months, the Rockies have developed a knack for rallying from behind to capture some victories.
Young players like Cole Carrigg and TJ Rumfield have been integral to the efforts around getting back into ballgames. Catcher Hunter Goodman, who will be at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game as an NL reserve, has been hitting home runs at a great pace.
It should be noted, too, that the Rockies' bullpen has been pretty good during late-game rallies. The starting pitching, though, remains a rocky problem (no pun intended). Colorado spent a lot of picks in last weekend's 2026 MLB Draft to fill up its minor-league system with new pitchers.
That's a good thing because the MLB team will need to have stronger starting pitching down the road.
But the starters, at this point, need to go deeper into games, like into the sixth inning ideally. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer has had to really lean on his bullpen. While Colorado isn't going to enter the MLB trade deadline as buyers, maybe they can pick up a veteran arm for the second half.
What does the second half look like?
It also needs to be noted that the team's record in June was better. July has gotten off to a decent start, too.
Yet, if the Rockies really want to make some headway on the Giants, then they need to get their collective acts together.
Steady hitting, stronger starting pitching, and to continue to lean in on the positives that happened in the first half of the 2026 MLB season need to happen all the time.
The Rockies really don't have room for error. Will there be mistakes at time during the rest of this season? Of course, they will happen.
Schaeffer and his players, though, have developed a bit of a swagger and attitude. Those are positive aspects, especially when players like Carrigg challenge veterans like Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing.
It's high time for Colorado to maintain that attitude, that swagger, and push toward fourth place in the NL West. Can the Rockies get into position to do so? They are going to have to put their best foot forward.
