Mickey Moniak hit his 15th home run this season and Jake McCarthy totaled four RBIs as the Colorado Rockies sent the Miami Marlins packing from the Mile High City.
It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon for a ballgame at Coors Field. The Colorado Rockies must have loved that weather, too, as they put on their hitting shoes against the Miami Marlins.
The Rockies combined for a 14-hit attack and Mickey Moniak (him again? Yes) hit his 15h home run as Colorado obliterated the Marlins 14-4. This type of game is a great set-up for the Rockies before the San Francisco Giants come to Coors Field for a pretty big series starting on Friday night.
Besides Moniak having a day at the plate, Jake McCarthy smashed his seventh home run this season as part of a four-RBI day for the Rockies' leadoff hitter. Moniak went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. This also marked the third straight game that Moniak has slugged a home run, too.
Hitting Machine Alive for Rockies
Besides McCarthy, who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and his four RBIs, other Colorado hitters who had two hits in the ballgame included TJ Rumfield, Troy Johnston, and Brett Sullivan.
Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen only worked 4.1 innings for manager Warren Schaeffer on Thursday before getting pulled. Lorenzen allowed four hits, four earned runs, walked six, and struck out one in 95 pitches. Schaeffer called upon relievers Brennan Bernardino, Victor Vadnik, and Zach Agnos to keep the Marlins' bats silent.
Bernardino picked up the win in relief of Lorenzen, getting his overall record this season to 3-3. Miami reliever John King absorbed the loss, falling to 6-2 overall.
Consider that job done as Miami only had three total hits and no earned runs off of the Rockies' trio of relievers. Seeing his bullpen come through in a much-needed situation probably made Schaeffer feel a lot better after Thursday's victory.
Marlins Get Early Jump
Miami did jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Xavier Edwards' RBI fielder's choice and Owen Caissie's RBI sacrifice fly were the big knocks for the Marlins. Moniak's home run in the bottom of the first cut into Miami's lead at 2-1.
In the top of the third inning, Edwards' RBI sacrifice fly popped the Marlins' lead up to 3-1. But Colorado also had its rally shoes on, too, as Willi Castro's single to center scored both Moniak and McCarthy to tie things up at 3-3.
The Marlins went back on top of this see-saw affair with a run in the top of the fourth, giving them a 4-3 advantage. That, though, was short-lived. McCarthy's home run was a two-run blast with Edouard Julien scoring ahead of him and it was now 5-4 Rockies.
Then came the seven-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning for Colorado. McCarthy's two-run single, Moniak's RBI single, Rumfield's RBI single, Johnston's two-run single, and a Cole Carrigg RBI sacrifice fly accounted for the Rockies' runs here.
With that inning behind them, the Rockies took full control of the game and now led 12-4. Carrigg hit another RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Sullivan had an RBI single to wrap up the scoring for Colorado.
The win raises the Rockies' overall record to 35-53. Right now, ahead of the Giants' series opener on Friday night at Coors Field, Colorado sits two full games behind San Francisco in the National League West Division.
If they want to climb out of the cellar before Sunday night, then the Rockies have to bring out the brooms and sweep away San Francisco.
Let's see if Schaeffer and Co. can get the job done.
