It's not been a good series for the Colorado Rockies. They will try and nab a win against the Athletics on Sunday afternoon.
The Colorado Rockies have not been able to pick up a victory in Las Vegas as the first two games have gone to the Athletics. Now, the question becomes this: Can they take a win on Sunday afternoon before getting out of town?
If any MLB team needs a win (and there are some who do), then Colorado falls into that category.
On Saturday night, Rockies starter Kyle Freeland just was not pitching his best. In fact, he ended up getting the defeat against the Athletics in a 7-5 loss. Freeland is now 1-7 this season, and that's not a really good record.
After the last two losses, the Rockies are 26-45 overall and are in last place in the National League West Division.
Rockies Playing at Neutral Field
As for the Athletics, they are now 35-35 after picking up the first two wins against Colorado at Las Vegas Ballpark.
Here are a few notes from the Rockies' communications team about Colorado playing this series against the Athletics. This series marked the third time in Rockies' franchise history that the franchise has played a regular-season game at a neutral site ballpark.
The two other times were in Mexico, where Colorado picked up a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico. That game took place on Opening Day on April 4, 1999. The second time was in 2024 in two games against the Houston Astros at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in Mexico City.
How about this tidbit: Las Vegas, Nevada, is at 2,000 feet above sea level. It is the second-highest elevation for any ballpark in the major leagues behind Coors Field. The Rockies' home stadium is at 5,280 feet above sea level.
Castellano Called Up From Triple-A
On Saturday before the loss to the Athletics, the Rockies made some adjustments to their pitching staff. Right-handed pitcher Eiberson Castellano had his contract selected from the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. When he gets into a game, that'll mark his MLB debut.
And, that'll mark the seventh Rockies player to make an MLB debut in 2026. In fact, five debuts have taken place since May 15.
On Friday, left-handed pitcher Sean Sullivan took to the mound for Colorado. He was one of seven Rockies starters in franchise history to throw at least three scoreless innings in their MLB debut, too.
Who will be the starting pitchers for the Rockies and Athletics? Colorado is sending out Tomoyuki Sugano, who is 6-4 overall, while the Athletics are going to have Jeffrey Springs, who is going into Sunday's showdown at 3-6.
First pitch is set for 1:05 MT.
Tyler Freeman Back With Team
On Sunday morning, the Rockies announced that infielder-outfielder Tyler Freeman has rejoined the team's roster from being on the seven-day concussion Injured List. To make room for Freeman, infielder Chad Stevens was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Freeman took a fastball to his helmet from Milwaukee Brewers pitching ace Jacob Misiorowski recently.
