Rookie Cole Carrigg has been outstanding in the field, at the plate for the Colorado Rockies this season.
If you have been living under a rock for the first half of the Colorado Rockies' 2026 MLB season, then you have missed the incredible play of Cole Carrigg.
When Carrigg gets on the field, he immediately brings some guts, some electricity, some fire to the Rockies' lineup. He showed some real toughness after getting into a kerfuffle with Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing. It appeared that Rushing didn't appreciate Carrigg sliding into home plate on a play.
After Carrigg got up, Rushing started jawing at him. But Carrigg didn't just slink back to the Colorado dugout. Oh no, he barked right back and it even brought a few Rockies and Dodgers players onto the field. Nothing escalated further and the game eventually continued.
Good numbers for Carrigg
Yet, in that one moment, Carrigg indicated that he was not going to back down from defending himself or his team.
In his first 31 MLB games this season, Carrigg has put together a slash line of .273/.515/.871. He has four home runs, 22 RBIs, six doubles, and three triples. When he is in the field, Carrigg is not shying away from diving on the turf for catch. He's also been known to make a catch when ranging back toward the center-field wall.
Carrigg has coaxed 13 walks while striking out 26 times.
This season's Rockies team has started to develop a thick skin when playing. Carrigg also has had a definite role in helping Colorado rally from games where they were behind. He is sort of like the Energizer Bunny who just keeps going and going and going.
Young stars are producing
The fact that Carrigg, TJ Rumfield, Jake McCarthy, National League All-Star team member catcher Hunter Goodman, and others, along with Kyle Karros, step up and make their presence felt is a powerful testament to what Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer has been doing with his roster.
As long as Carrigg continues to perform at a high level, there's no need to send him back to the minor leagues. His grit and toughness are elements that Colorado need to keep showing, especially when the second half starts on Friday night at Coors Field.
Right now, the Rockies are 20 games below .500 and still in last place in the National League West Division. They are also a few games behind the San Francisco Giants, who are in fourth place in the NL West. There is time for Colorado to catch San Francisco, but they have to put the hammer down and get busy quickly.
Carrigg will be one player that the Rockies, despite his youth, are going to lean on for some positive results.
