The No. 6 prospect for the Colorado Rockies showed some scrappy style of play as they beat Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

Over the history of Major League Baseball, there have been a few players who showed that they cared through a lot of hustle. For me, the first name that comes to mind is "Charlie Hustle" himself, Pete Rose.

Yes, it's way, way too early in his MLB career, but could Cole Carrigg be an up-and-coming, Rose style of player? Carrigg sure delivered some solid at-bats in his MLB debut on Tuesday night, when the Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 7-3 at Coors Field.

The Rockies are just going through a tough stretch right now as the 2026 MLB season rolls into June. Carrigg, though, has a golden opportunity to have his youthful energy and attitude to permeate throughout the Rockies' clubhouse.

So, what did Carrigg think of his first game in the big leagues? His first major-league hit was a triple. That's a fantastic way to introduce himself to the Rockies' faithful.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way than to have a triple as my first one,” said Carrigg, according to MLB.com writer Thomas Harding. “I love pushing it and going for three. Man, it was really awesome.”

Schaeffer Loved Seeing Carrigg's Style

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer had a front-row seat in the dugout, watching how Carrigg responded to being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque. So far (and it's been just one game, to be clear), so good.

“Just pure joy, and it couldn’t have been a better first hit for a player like that,” Schaeffer said. “Super exciting, just watching him run the bases like a young colt.”

Now, some Rockies fans might think about how Carrigg played on Tuesday night and wonder if he has a chance to mature on the field. Well, there is some data to back up the fact that Carrigg has a set of solid tools to play in the majors.

Colorado drafted Carrigg as the 65th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of San Diego State. His combine workouts included a 100 mph throw from shortstop. Carrigg followed that up with a pair of 101 mph and 102 mph throws from the outfield.

Carrigg Showed Off His Speed

Carrigg also showed that he has the speed to burn on the basepaths. After hitting his triple, Carrigg flew from home plate to third base in 11.26 seconds. It's the 12th-fastest effort in the major leagues this season.

With Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak out with injuries at this time, the Rockies are hopeful that Carrigg can fill in for them. He cannot, of course, reach a level of maturity right now that Doyle and Moniak have developed through their careers.

But Carrigg is showing solid signs right now that he's a threat when facing other MLB teams. His maturity level as he has played in the Rockies' minor-league system.

“We’ve seen that maturity piece come a long way,” Rockies player development director Chris Forbes said. “He’s a wild stallion. There’s only so much you want to do because you don’t want to numb him.

Carrigg gets another chance to impress people on Wednesday as the Cubs and Rockies continue their series at Coors Field in Denver.
