Seiya Suzuki's grand slam among three homers hit by Chicago Cubs in downing Colorado Rockies 9-3.
The Colorado Rockies were in a pretty good position to pick up a series sweep over the Chicago Cubs. Seiya Suzuki and a couple of other Cubs teammates had different thoughts, using the home run to carry Chicago past Colorado 9-3 on Thursday afternoon at Coors Field in Denver.
Rockies starter Ryan Feltner didn't have a good outing, falling to 2-2 this season. In 4.1 innings of work, Feltner gave up four hits, six earned runs, walked three, struck out three, and gave up one home run.
Edward Cabrera got the win for the Cubs, going to 4-3 this season. In 5.1 innings of work, Cabrera allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked two, struck out five, and gave up two homers.
Carrigg Gets First MLB Home Run
Cole Carrigg connected on a Cabrera pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning for his first major-league home run. Brett Sullivan added two solo homers in the game, but these homers were not enough to lift the Rockies to a victory.
The first of Sullivan's homers in the bottom of the third inning staked Colorado to an early 1-0 lead. But the Cubs took the lead in the top of the fourth.
Pete Crow-Armstrong singled to right-center field, then, with one out, Crow-Armstrong stole second base. Michael Busch singled to center field, moving Crow-Armstrong to third.
Ian Happ then walked to load the bases. Suzuki hit a grand slam down the left-field line on a 1-0 pitch, putting Chicago up 4-1.
Carrigg's home run to right field on a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the fourth cut into the Cubs' lead at 4-2.
But Chicago padded its lead in the top of the fifth inning. Dansby Swanson walked and stole second base. Crow-Armstrong grounded out. Alex Bregman walked, bringing Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer out to replace Feltner with Blas Castaño.
Cubs' Counsell Gets Tossed
Michael Busch singled to right field, scoring Swanson. Ian Happ's sacrifice fly plated Bregman, giving the Cubs a 6-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Cubs manager Craig Counsell was ejected by home plate umpire Louie Krupa. It's Counsell's second ejection this season and the 36th one in his MLB managerial career.
Chicago added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Crow-Armstrong doubled. Bregman smoked a 1-2 pitch out of the park, giving the Cubs an 8-2 lead. The Cubs scored their final run in the eighth inning as Carson Kelly hit a home run to left field on an 0-2 pitch.
Sullivan's solo blast in the ninth wrapped up the scoring, sending the Rockies to another loss this season.
Colorado was 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left 10 total runners on base. Chicago was 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left four runners on base.
The Rockies are heading to Las Vegas. No, it's not for fun unless they can secure a series win or sweep over the Athletics. Colorado and the Athletics will play a three-game series at Las Vegas Ballpark, starting Friday night. The Athletics will start playing at their new stadium on the Las Vegas Strip in the 2028 MLB season.
