Monday night's loss to Chicago Cubs in ninth inning showed Colorado Rockies still have spots to correct.
For anyone who watched Monday night's game between the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs, they, unfortunately, saw a bullpen meltdown from the Rockies.
And, it was one that cost them a potential win. Colorado reliever Juan Mejia got off to a pretty decent start when he came into the game at Wrigley Field. But things went sideways, leading Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer to pull Mejia in favor of Seth Halvorsen.
Halvorsen came on and walked in the game-winning run as the Cubs picked up a 5-4 win.
Schaeffer Still Backs Bullpen
How does Schaeffer view his bullpen at this point, especially after the Monday night meltdown?
“We have multiple guys that can do that,” Schaeffer said, according to MLB.com Rockies reporter Thomas Harding. “We have a 'pen actually full of them. ‘Senza’ [Antonio Senzatela] can do it. Halvorsen can do it. Vodnik can do it. Mejia can do it. [Brennan] Bernardino can do it. We've seen [Zach] Agnos do it. Jaden [Hill] can do it.
“We have a whole slew of guys that can close games down," Schaeffer added. "It's the last three outs of a ballgame, just didn't get [it] done.”
How many outs, though, did Mejia and Halvorsen record in their outings against the Cubs? Just one. Yes, just one single out.
Lorenzen Aware of How Walks Can Hurt
Colorado starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen, who worked an effective five innings, talked about the role that too many walks can come into play.
“You’re going to have games like today where you walk some guys,” Lorenzen said. “If we focus on just that, it’s just going to spiral. Just move on. That’s the most important thing about being a reliever, being able to bounce back and show up the next day and not let one outing go into the next."
The Rockies are now 27-46 this season, compared to the Cubs' 38-35 mark. These two go at it again on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field in game two of their three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MDT.
Ryan Feltner gets the start for Colorado. He's 2-2 this season with a 5.20 ERA, along with a 1.21 WHIP. He's walked 13 batters, but struck out 26, too. Chicago counters with Edward Cabrera, who is now 4-3 with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Cabrera has walked 23 batters, but struck out 58.
Who's a player to watch on Tuesday night? Tune into see rookie Cole Carrigg, who smashed his third home run this season on Monday night. His three-run home run put Colorado up 4-2 at one point before the Cubs rallied to get the victory.
