First baseman Hunter Goodman smashed three home runs as Colorado Rockies rolled over Minnesota Twins 8-5.
Hunter Goodman better be on the National League All-Star team or there might be a riot down at Coors Field.
Goodman slammed not one, not two, but three home runs as the Colorado Rockies dominated the Minnesota Twins 8-5 on Saturday night at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Rockies scored single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. But they cranked up the offense with three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth innings.
Lorenzen Gets Third Win This Season
Michael Lorenzen went 5.2 innings in getting the win for Colorado, his third victory this season. He allowed seven hits, two earned runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out one. Victor Vodnik, Brennan Bernardino, and Zach Agnos all followed Lorenzen, only to have Jimmy Herget come on to close out the game.
Goodman hit his first home run in the top of the first inning, putting Colorado up 1-0 early. Kody Clemens' RBI single in the bottom of the first helped the Twins tie things up at 1-1.
Guess what happened in the top of the third inning? Goodman with another homer? You betcha. His second dinger on Saturday night put Colorado back up in front 2-1. Mickey Moniak's RBI groundout scored Jake McCarthy in the fifth and Colorado extended its lead to 3-1.
Minnesota got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning after Josh Bell tripled and Victor Caratini followed with an RBI sacrifice fly. That again put the Twins within one run to the Rockies at 3-2.
Make That Three Home Rus for Goodman
After Jake McCarthy singled and Ezequiel Tovar walked in the top of the seventh, Goodman stepped up to the plate and completed his home-run hat trick. Goodman simply sent a ball to the stratosphere over the left-center field wall, putting Colorado up 6-2.
By the way, that's 25 home runs now for Goodman...all before the All-Star break. Goodman was 3-for-5 with his three home runs and five total RBIs.
Let's go to the top of the eighth, where Cole Carrigg walked. Kyle Karros decided to show Goodman that he can hit a home run, too. Karros hit his fifth home run this season, a two-run blast that gave the Rockies a comfortable 8-2 advantage.
The game should be over now, right?
Not so fast, my friend.
Shaky Rockies' Bullpen Almost Lost It
Colorado's bullpen was doing its best to get the Twins back into the game. It almost worked, too. Almost. Agnos came out of the bullpen for the Rockies to open the ninth and, well, he just didn't look good.
Agnos loaded the bases, only to have Trevor Larnach double to center field. That cleared the bases and gave Minnesota some hope at 8-5. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer decided to go back to the bullpen and call on Jimmy Herget to, hopefully, close it out.
Herget got Byron Buxton and Austin Martin out and, finally, the Rockies could celebrate a win. It was Herget's third save this season.
This was a well-earned victory by Colorado, who rallied ferociously on Friday night, took the lead late, and lost the game in the 10th inning.
Nick Paredes took the defeat for the Twins, his first decision this season. In 5.1 innings, Paredes gave up eight hits, three earned runs, didn't walk a batter, struck out two, and gave up two of Goodman's three home runs.
This series will wrap up on Sunday afternoon at Target Field.
