Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman put on his own version of Home Run Derby on Sunday, hitting three home runs against the Cincinnati Reds.
Hunter Goodman was seeing the baseball really well at the plate. He put an exclamation point on a stellar effort, hitting three home runs on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field against the Cincinnati Reds.
To say the least, Goodman was on a heater against Reds pitchers.
If the Rockies want to continue on an upward trend (and they are on one right now), then Goodman will have to keep contributing this way. Of course, it would help if the rest of the Rockies' lineup chipped in as well.
Colorado's starting pitchers, though, have to step up and show up when needed, too.
Goodman was too good to be true
Goodman made the National League All-Star team as a reserve catcher in last Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game, played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. It's obvious that Goodman should have been a starter, yet the baseball fans voting for the catcher's position didn't see fit to do so.
Colorado was put in an early hole as Rockies starter Ryan Feltner wasn't sharp from the first pitch. Feltner gave up five runs in the top of the first inning, immediately putting his team in a deep hole before the Rockies got to the plate for the first time.
Feltner took the loss. He only went 2.1 innings, giving up seven hits, eight earned runs, walked four, struck out three, and gave up three home runs. This outing boosted Feltner to the owner of a 5.48 ERA.
Tanner Gordon followed Feltner and put together an effective 5.2-inning effort. Gordon worked 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits, one earned run, walked one, struck out two, and gave up a home run, too.
Let's get to what Goodman did, though.
Home run barrage from Goodman
He hit his first home run of the day in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Rockies on the board and cutting into the Reds' lead at 5-1. With the Reds now up 9-1, Goodman smashed a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. That got Colorado a bit closer at 9-3.
Then, in the bottom of the eighth, Goodman hit his third home run of the game. That two-run blast gave Goodman his 30th home run this season and moved the Rockies a little bit closer at 9-5. The Reds added one more run in the top of the ninth and that was the ballgame.
Reds starter Hunter Greene worked six innings and struck out seven batters en route to the victory. Greene is now 2-1 this season as he's ramping up in his own Spring Training during the 2026 regular season. He missed the first part of this season while he was recovering from surgery.
Final score: Reds 9, Rockies 6.
On Monday, Colorado opens a three-game series at Coors Field against the Washington Nationals.
