Simply unbelievable. The Colorado Rockies bumbled through a mess in the eighth inning against the Boston Red Sox. Entering the bottom of the ninth, the Red Sox held a 2-0 lead. But Colorado won 3-2 in a most improbable way.

Boston sent stellar reliever Aroldis Chapman to drop the hammer on the Rockies. What happened next? Well, this finish on Monday night is one that Rockies fans may be talking about for a long, long time.

Chapman only threw eight pitches, all strikes. But the Rockies' hitters connected on those fastballs, loading the bases with nobody out. Jake McCarthy, coming off a series against Pittsburgh where he hit an inside-the-park home run, stepped to the plate.

McCarthy saw a pitch to hit and he didn't miss. He smacked a ball inside the third-base line and down to left field. The Rockies then had a track meet around the bases, then McCarthy reached third base. That was a game-winning, bases-clearing triple off of Chapman.

This was a Hollywood-style ending as Colorado picked up a big-time win over a legendary reliever.

Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik picked up the victory. He's now 2-2 with a hefty 7.06 ERA. As for Chapman, he got the loss and falls to 0-2 this season. His ERA? Oh, it's a pretty-low 2.08.

Colorado starter Ryan Feltner worked an effective six innings. Feltner gave up four hits, two earned runs, walked four, and struck out two. Boston starter Jake Bennett threw six innings of four-hit shutout ball.

The game was scoreless through five innings before the Red Sox got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Willson Contreras' 12th double this season got Boston in front at 1-0. Caleb Durbin followed with a run-scoring single and the Red Sox had a 2-0 lead. Boston had plenty of chances to add to their run total, but it did not happen.

Let's break down this eighth-inning madness for the Rockies. With Edouard Julien on base, Mickey Moniak, returning from spending time on the Injured List, singled to right and Julien reached second base.

Willi Castro hit a bloop single to center field, where Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela got to the ball. When he did, Rafaela was midway between second base and center field. He threw a strike to home plate, and Julien was tagged out.

Moniak reached second base, but the Rockies were not on the scoreboard. He was there now with two outs. Tyler Freeman then singled to right field, but Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu got the ball back into the infield.

Moniak got caught between second and third base. He was tagged out as Abreu threw it to Boston catcher Connor Wong. Wong, then, threw the ball to shortstop Marcelo Meyer. That was the third out in what turned out to be a frustrating inning as Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer looked on from the dugout.

Then, we get to the bottom of the ninth. Hunter Goodman singled to left field, and TJ Rumfield moved to second base. Cole Carrigg then had an infield hit and reached first base, loading it all up. 

McCarthy stepped up to face Chapman and did the dang thing, setting off a wild celebration among Rockies players and fans at Coors Field.

Boston was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven total runners on base. Colorado was 4-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left six total runners on base.

Just another Monday night in the Mile High City.

The Red Sox and Rockies will go at it in game two on Tuesday afternoon. They'll close out the series on Wednesday.

The question now becomes this: Can the Rockies pull another rabbit out of the hat? Don't be surprised if it happens again this season at some point.
