While the Colorado Rockies' comeback win over the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field on Wednesday night wasn't the best comeback of the night in the sports world, they'll take it anyway.

And, so will rookie Sterlin Thompson.

Thompson got a pitch to hit and didn't miss it. His pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning helped Colorado secure a 3-2 win.

There haven't been too many hero moments for the Rockies this season. Maybe the team needs a little luck in the mix, too. Anything to improve their season record will help Colorado right now.

Troy Johnston drew a walk and Brett Sullivan singled, setting the stage for a photo finish.

Cubs reliever Daniel Palencia gave up the game-winning hit. After the game, Thompson spoke with reporters about he synthesized his approach in the moment.

“He throws 50 percent heater, and he has a slider,” Thompson said, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com. “I was just, 'Get the [bat] head out, don’t miss the heater.' His changeup was kind of all right.

"But in that situation, when he was throwing to Troy and [Sullivan] he was throwing the heater and missing the slider. I was like, ‘When I get the heater, I’m gonna jump on it.'”

Here's a cool statistic from Wednesday night's win: Thompson's walk-off hit was his first in the majors, and he is the third Rockies rookie to have a pinch-hit walk-off in his rookie season. Who were the other two? Colorado legend Todd Helton in 1997, and Adam Melhuse in 2000.

It took a Rockies rookie player 25-plus seasons to do this again.

By the way, don't think that Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer wasn't happy with Thompson putting on his Superman cape for the victory. He loved it, and even tipped his cap in Thompson's direction for his hard work.

“We all know he can do it,” Schaeffer said in his postgame press conference. “He came up and it took him a couple weeks to get his feet under him in the big leagues, which is really hard here, especially the first time. It just seems he’s gaining confidence with every at-bat. We really like the way he’s been conducting his at-bats.”

Thompson happens to be a Colorado native, but there's a caveat to this. He and his family ended up moving to Florida when he was six months old. Still, the Mile High City will be glad to claim him for a spot, at least for one night, among Denver sports' heroes.

Yes, the Rockies' rally was great. But it has to play second fiddle to the New York Knicks' 29-point rally against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals at the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Knicks won 107-106 on OG Anunoby's incredible tip-in.

It might not look pretty as the Rockies are creeping closer to the middle of June, but they have a very long shot to reach the MLB postseason. There's a ton of work to do. Maybe Thompson's effort kickstarts the Rockies in a consistent winning direction.
