Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Tanner Gordon was not able to tamp down a San Diego Padres offensive onslaught.
Leading into Thursday afternoon's game against the San Diego Padres, the Colorado Rockies were looking to turn their luck at Coors Field into a victory.
Well, that just didn't happen at all.
Rockies starting pitcher Tanner Gordon was hoping to keep the Padres' bats in check. But 11 Padres hitters came to the plate in the top of the second inning, racked up seven runs, and didn't look back en route to a 9-2 victory.
Gordon worked the first three innings, giving up 10 hits, seven earned runs, walked two, struck out three, and surrendered a home run.
Zach Agnos didn't keep Padres bats quiet
After Gordon left, Zach Agnos worked three innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out two. Agnos needed to come in and shut down San Diego hitters and that just didn't happen here for him.
Colorado is 56-97 after Thursday's defeat and, well, it's pretty much certain now (although miracles happen) that the Rockies will have yet another 100-loss season. Yet, the team has put up more than 10 additional wins than the 2025 season's squad did. There is improvement happening here, Rockies fans.
Padres center fielder Dustin Harris went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, Shortstop Xander Bogaerts also went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and scored one run.
Colorado left fielder-center fielder Mickey Moniak went 2-for-3 and catcher Brett Sullivan put in a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Yet the Rockies' offense just was not clicking on all cylinders at a time and place where they need all the help that they can get.
Jake McCarthy collects 11th triple
Jake McCarthy hit his 11th triple to right-center field in the bottom of the first inning and Connor Norby connected on an RBI single, putting the Rockies up 1-0 after one. Then, the Padres got busy at the plate and went up 7-1 after the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, third baseman Kyle Karros singled and Cole Carrigg scored on the play. That put the Rockies within 7-2, but that put a wrap on any offense from Colorado in this one.
The Rockies were 2-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven total runners on base. San Diego went 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position and ended up leaving nine runners on base. They could have had more runs against Colorado, but the Padres put up more than enough runs.
This wrapped up a three-game series against San Diego, and the Padres won two out of three games. The Seattle Mariners, who have really underperformed this season, come into Coors Field for a three-game weekend series against the Rockies.
