When a fan sees the Colorado Rockies rank last in runs allowed and team ERA in all of MLB, they might have a few questions for team management.
While the Colorado Rockies now sit 24 games under .500 at 42-66, two glaring reasons pop up when looking at the team's pitching staff.
Mind you, these statistics could give Rockies fans heartburn, heartaches, and a tummy ache all rolled into one experience. In looking at the runs allowed/game category on StatPro, Colorado ranks No. 30 in giving up 5.8 runs per game.
What about team ERA in all of baseball? Once again, the Rockies bring up the rear at No. 30 with an incredibly high 5,57 mark.
How bad is Rockies pitching?
These numbers do give credence to just how bad Colorado's pitching staff has been this season. Tomoyuki Sugano leads the team with 10 wins. After that, though, the pitching staff only has single-digit-winning hurlers.
Kyle Freeland, a native of Denver, and Michael Lorenzen have not been getting the job done. Let's take a look at some overall pitching numbers after the Rockies lost 8-7 to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night at Petco Park in San Diego.
Brennan Bernardino, a reliever, has a 2.68 ERA. Antonio Senzatela, yet another relief pitcher, is second with a 3.66 ERA. Chase Dollander, who is currently on the 60-day Injured List, comes in third in the team ERA rankings with a 3.89 ERA.
And then, the ERA numbers go higher. Sugano, along with his 10 victories, sits at No. 4 with a 4.69 ERA. Jose Quintana rounds out the top five with a 5.27 ERA.
In looking at these numbers, it's kind of incredible that the Rockies have been able to put up a few more wins at this point in the 2026 MLB season compared to last season.
Maybe it's time to change things up
Freeland and Lorenzen lead Colorado in strikeouts with 85 and 80, respectively, as the season's second half is fully underway.
Maybe the time has come for Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes to decide to trade away a few pitchers and get a ready-made starter and some prospects back in return.
One must understand that Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer is working with who he has among starters and relievers. These guys do their best, of course, yet the future of the ballclub player-wise is front and center on DePodesta's mind.
Yes, the MLB Trade Deadline is coming up fast on Aug. 3. There has been plenty of trade chatter around players like Jake McCarthy, Mickey Moniak, and Hunter Goodman. At this time, it appears more likely that Goodman will not go anywhere. That would be a good call because Goodman is the only true slugger in the Colorado lineup right now.
On Wednesday, the Rockies and Padres will close out their short two-game series. Colorado has to come out forcefully and seek a split. If they just come out and are discombobulated like Tuesday night's four-error debacle, then Colorado will just sink further at the bottom of the National League West Division standings.
