The Colorado Rockies lost their 99th game of the season by falling to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
The Colorado Rockies suffered a 2-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday at Coors Field in Denver.
The Rockies are now just one loss away from reaching 100 for the fourth straight season. And, after a strong start in the opening days of September, they have also fallen in 13 of their 16 contests since then.
Decent pitching
Colorado’s pitching staff has struggled all season, but Sunday was not a bad day for it.
Tomoyuki Sugano, one of the better options in the lineup, got the starting nod for the Rockies. Sugano was able to provide five innings of work, and in that span, he struck out five batters while allowing a hit, an earned run and two walks.
After Sugano’s afternoon ended, Ryan Feltner took over in a relief appearance. It was his 25th appearance of the year, and 22 of them have been in a starting role.
Feltner provided three innings for Colorado, and he allowed two hits, an earned run and a walk while notching one strikeout. Finally, Jimmy Herget closed the game and allowed one hit in one inning of work.
Unfortunately for Sugano, he was assessed the losing decision, which makes him 1-7 dating back to Aug. 5 and 12-11 overall after he went 7-0 through June and July. It was a rare, decent performance by the Rockies’ arms, but the offense did not hold up their end of the bargain.
Rough day at the plate
Colorado’s offense has been much more consistent this year, and even impressive at times, but it was in a poor state against the Mariners.
The Rockies only mustered five hits in 32 at-bats and struck out 10 times as Mariners rookie left-hander Kade Anderson pitched seven shutout innings that included seven strikeouts. The only reason they scored was that Hunter Goodman blasted his 39th home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Otherwise, nothing went their way. Even though Goodman delivered another home run, it was still his only hit in four at-bats, and he was one of three players to strike out twice.
For the better part of the month, another 100-loss season has felt inevitable for this organization. Now, it is on the cusp of it.
Colorado has had moments that have inspired confidence for the future, and it has found a way to avoid the level of disaster reached last season, but it has still been ugly.
The Rockies will have Monday off before hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks for their final home series of 2026. It will be interesting to see how the fans send them off, and whether this group can give them something to root for before Coors Field is vacated until next spring.
