Seth Halvorsen gives up game-winning run in seventh as Colorado Rockies aren't able to win series finale against Minnesota Twins.
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Ryan Feltner threw a solid six innings on Sunday at Target Field against the Minnesota Twins. But reliever Seth Halvorsen couldn't keep the game tied as he gave up the game-winning run, helping the Twins pick up a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn.
Feltner went six innings, giving up five hits, two runs (one earned), didn't allow a walk or record a strikeout, and just gave up a home run.
For Halvorsen, though, he took the first loss on his season record. He went 0.2 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, didn't allow a walk or record a strikeout, and also gave up a home run.
Twins starter Connor Prielipp also worked six innings. He allowed six hits, two earned runs, didn't walk a batter, but recorded double-digit strikeouts with 10 against a pretty stout Rockies' offense. Reliever Andrew Morris worked 1.1 innings as he picked up the victory, going to 4-2 this season.
Yoendrys Gomez worked a clean ninth inning for his eighth save this season.
Rockies Jump Out Early
Colorado jumped out to a 1-0 lead on TJ Rumfield's infield single that scored Willi Castro.
The Twins, though, posted single runs in the second and fourth innings. Royce Lewis opened the second with a double, then Brooks Lee hit a slow roller to Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros. Lewis scored on a Karros throwing error, tying the game at 1-1.
Kody Clemens opened the Twins' fourth inning with his 13th home run this season, a solo shot, and Minnesota grabbed a 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the sixth inning with two outs, Troy Johnston's single to right field brought home Rumfield to tie things up again at 2-2. But, in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Ryan Kriedler smashed his fifth home run this season. It was a solo shot, but it was enough to put Minnesota back on top at 3-2.
For Colorado in the top of the ninth, Braxton Fulford was hit by a pitch and took first base. After that, though, Gomez got Jake McCarthy, Castro, and pinch-hitter Mickey Moniak out to seal the win.
Colorado Had Scoring Chances
What's so frustrating about this loss? The Rockies were 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left nine total runners on base. So, Colorado had opportunities to get more runs on the scoreboard but just didn't get the job done.
The Rockies fall to 33-51 overall this season. They return to Coors Field on Monday night, where Colorado opens a four-game series against the Miami Marlins. After Miami gets out of Denver, the San Francisco Giants come to Denver for a three-game weekend series.
It depends on how that Giants series goes whether the Rockies can hurdle over San Francisco in the National League West Division.
These next seven games will be worth paying attention to at this time.
