According to a report, the Colorado Rockies are asking for the No. 1 prospects from either the Boston Red Sox or Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for catcher Hunter Goodman.
Just when you think trade chatter around Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman was dying down, it picked up a new beat on Thursday.
Leave it to MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal to bring his sourced reports and give Rockies fans something to ponder while having a cup of coffee and a donut.
Well, let's get to the meat of the matter.
Rosenthal had this report, which was posted on Just Baseball's account on X.
"The Rockies have asked for each of the Red Sox's and Rays' #1 prospects in Franklin Arias and Theo Gillen in a potential Hunter Goodman trade, per @Ken_Rosenthal," the post indicated. "The Yankees are also among the teams with interest in Goodman."
AL East squads want Goodman
Three teams, all in the American League East Division, are looking to bring aboard Goodman as a piece to be involved in the Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees' postseason push.
This report, if it is true, just put another thing for Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes on red alert.
Of course, the Rockies probably have had calls on other players. But trading the one really big bat in the Colorado lineup will lend credence to thoughts that the ballclub is already calling the 2026 season a wash, so to speak, and looking ahead.
Goodman not only has been a menace at the plate this season, but he's also been a pretty reliable player at catcher.
It also should be noted that these three AL East teams may have some prospects to try and package into a deal with Colorado. Still, the asking price from the Rockies for Goodman might be too steep for the Rays, Red Sox, and Yankees right now.
DePodesta, Byrnes might face some heat
There will be a level of frustration and even anger if any deal with Goodman goes down. Of course, there will be those fans out there who mutter and say "same old Rockies." DePodesta and Byrnes are trying to change that narrative.
Just how desperate are these AL East squads? Do they really want to give up their top prospects for a catcher? I just keep looking at that asking price and saying, "Nah, the Rays and Red Sox are not going to part with their No. 1 prospects."
This is the MLB Trade Deadline season, though. Everything looks like it is on the table for Colorado at this time and moving forward until Aug. 3. Yes, the deadline is that close right now.
It will be interesting to see how DePodesta and Byrnes explain trading away Goodman if, and that's a big if, it does happen.
Colorado fans might need to drop the coffee and go for a stiff drink.
