Colorado Rockies decided to have some batting practice in Las Vegas on Sunday, totally dominate Athletics.
At one time, the Athletics' franchise had the "Bash Brothers" in Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco. Well, the Colorado Rockies decided to let their own bash brothers get turned loose at Las Vegas Ballpark on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon.
The Rockies scored the most runs in franchise history. Colorado totally put the Athletics in a sleeper hold in Sunday's game. The Rockies won 23-9 -- no, that's not a misprint.
Colorado decided to make sure they got a lot of hits on Sunday. The Athletics' fans had already left to find a cool casino or bar to watch the rest of this game by the eighth and ninth innings.
Colorado scored multiple runs in the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth inning. Want more good news? The Rockies are now just two games behind the San Francisco Giants for fourth place in the National League West Division.
Rockies' Lineup Was on Fire
This was total domination. With the win, the Rockies are now 27-45 while the Athletics fall back under the .500 level at 35-36.
Leadoff hitter Willi Castro went 4-for-6 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Tyler Freeman, who continued his return to the Rockies' lineup, was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. First baseman TJ Rumfield went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Catcher Hunter Goodman finished his day at 5-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar went 3-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Cole Carrigg continues to impress, finishing his day at 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
Third baseman Kyle Karros put up a big day, too. Karros went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Left fielder Troy Johnston was 2-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
As you can tell, the Rockies decided to make a statement, a big statement, against the Athletics.
Goodman hit two home runs, giving him 20 this season. Castro also had two home runs, including a grand slam in the eighth inning. Johnston and Rumfield added solo blasts in the ballgame.
Sugano Got the Win for Rockies
Tomoyuki Sugano picked up the win for the Rockies, going to 7-4 this season. Sugano worked five innings and, thanks to the offense busting up the Athletics' pitching staff, was able to get the victory. But Sugano worked five innings and gave up nine hits, eight earned runs, walked two, struck out two, and gave up a home run.
Blas Castano and Eiberson Castellano, who was just called up from Triple-A Albuquerque. worked the final four innings. Castellano made it through the last three innings, giving up four hits, no earned runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out two. That was good enough to give Castellano his first MLB save.
The Athletics burned through five pitchers on Sunday, four of which gave up multiple earned runs to Colorado. Jeffrey Springs started and took the loss, giving up seven hits, eight runs (six earned), didn't walk a batter, struck out five, and gave up three home runs.
Colorado will take a flight to the Windy City, Chicago, where the Rockies will start a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Monday night. The Rockies and Cubs will play three night games on the North Side of Chicago.
