With Monday night's loss to the Miami Marlins, the Colorado Rockies are three games below .500 in June. Can they finish off this month on a winning note?
Before the Colorado Rockies try to finish off June on a winning note, there are some issues coming out of Monday night's 10-7 loss to the Miami Marlins at Coors Field that deserve attention.
The Rockies are now 33-52 overall and are still trying to make up ground and get into fourth place in the National League West Division. Their upcoming three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field can flip that script.
Miami is a team that Colorado simply has trouble coming out on the winning side right now. The Marlins have now won seven straight against Colorado, which makes this loss streak against Miami the longest losing streak to the Marlins.
Rockies Keep Games Competitive
Additionally, according to the Rockies' media department, every single one of the Rockies' last 13 games from June 15 onward have been decided by just three runs or less. Right now in Rockies franchise history, that's the second longest streak after a 15-game stretch under those conditions since 1998.
That, too, is the longest such streak by any team in the major leagues this season, showing Rockies fans and followers that the team is staying competitive.
Catcher Hunter Goodman continues to be a player that is setting himself up to be among the legends in Rockies franchise history. He hit his 26th home run this season before July on June 29 against Miami. With that solo shot in the seventh inning, Goodman is the second Rockies player to homer at least 13 times in a calendar month.
He's also the third Colorado player to record at least 26 home runs in a calendar month, too. Want more Goodman statistics? He becomes the third Rockies player to post at least 26 dingers pre-All-Star break. The other two? Rockies legends Todd Helton and Larry Walker.
Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik picked up the loss on Monday night. Starter Sean Sullivan, in 4.2 innings, allowed six hits, five earned runs, walked two, struck out five, and allowed one home run.
In just Sullivan's fourth career MLB start, he recorded those five strikeouts, which are a career high. Sullivan has allowed at least three earned runs and multiple walks in his last three starts for Colorado.
Rumfield Extends Hitting Streak
With a 1-for-4 night at the plate, first baseman TJ Rumfield extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games. Rumfield is hitting .391 during the streak with three doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBIs, too. Right now, the rookie's 86 hits are the second-most by a Rockies rookie before the All-Star break in franchise history.
Guess who holds that mark? Another Rockies legend in Troy Tulowitzki, who had 90 in 2007.
Now, what about the Marlins? June has been an incredible month for the franchise.
Miami now has a major-league-best 19-6 record this month. The Marlins have become the third game in MLB with at least 19 wins in a month's period of time. Miami also have been some solid road warriors, too, as they are 9-4 away from loanDepot Park in Miami.
One more Marlins note, and this one focuses on starter Sandy Alcantara. He went 5.2 innings on Monday night, giving up seven hits, five earned runs, walked five, and struck out three. He finished up June with a 6-0 record, playing a major role in the Marlins' resurgence in June.
Colorado will try and get into the win column on Tuesday night at Coors Field.
