When looking at how the Colorado Rockies have been playing in one-run games recently, it should give Rockies fans a renewed sense of hope.
While Kyle Freeland and the Colorado Rockies look to get another series win, this time against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field, they've been really playing well in tight games.
According to the Rockies' media information department, since June 15, all eight games that Colorado has played have been decided by just three runs or less. This is the franchise's longest streak of these types of games since another eight-game period of time back in 2023.
Rockies fans have to go all the way back to 2022 for a similar streak. In April 2022, Colorado played nine consecutive games that were decided by three runs or less.
Want more data? Check this out. In the Rockies' last 10 games among 11 of them, they also have been decided by three runs or less. There is an outlier, though, and it works in Colorado's favor. They had a heck of an offensive game on June 14, when they battered the Athletics 23-9 at Las Vegas Ballpark.
In reviewing the current homestand between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Red Sox, all three Rockies' wins have been by just one run.
How impressive was Colorado's come-from-behind, 3-2 victory on Monday night? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Colorado is the first team since 1961 with eight hits in their final eight at-bats in a game.
TJ Rumfield Continues to Impress
For anyone paying attention to the Rockies under manager Warren Schaeffer, he's been able to get a lot of support from a few rookies this season.
One of those is rookie first baseman TJ Rumfield. He added to his statistics with a run-scoring double against the Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon.
He's put up 12 home runs before the All-Star break, making those the fourth-most homers by a Colorado rookie in the team's history. Additionally, Rumfield has 77 total hits and they are the fifth-most by a Rockies rookie player.
Rumfield, 26, ranks among qualified National League rookies in hits, batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS ... all of those put him in first place in those categories He ranks second in extra-base hits and total bases for a rookie player, and he's third in RBIs.
Finally, Rumfield captured NL Rookie of the Month honors in May. Rumfield is the first Colorado player to win that honor since Nolan Jones back in 2023.
Rumfield already is establishing himself as a player who can become a cornerstone in the Rockies' infield. That should make Schaeffer and Rockies general manager Josh Byrnes and president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta pretty happy.
Rockies fans have some things to feel good about right now, even with the tough-looking overall record. Colorado is slowly building an improving infrastructure from top to bottom. This team is worth watching now and in the future.
