Colorado Rockies held their own against Milwaukee Brewers, but a 10th-inning rally let Brew Crew capture series-opening victory.
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Ryan Feltner was outstanding on Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Rockies even held a lead after eight innings. But the Brewers scored four runs in the ninth inning, lost the lead, and regained it in the 10th inning.
All of that action led the Brewers, leaders in the National League Central Division, to a 9-7 win at Coors Field.
Before dissecting this loss, let's take a minute on Feltner. He picked up his second consecutive quality start, the second Rockies pitcher to do it two straight times this season. Tomoyuki Sugano had the other outing like that.
In his last two starts since coming off of the Injured List, Feltner is 2-0 with a scintillating 0.75 ERA. Over 12 innings, he has only allowed one earned run. Before going on the Injured List, Feltner was 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in five starts.
Brewers starter Brandon Sproat worked five innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, walked two, and struck out two. Trevor Megill earned the win in relief, after picking up his second blown save this season. Megill goes to 1-2.
Antonio Senzatela picked up his second blown save. He worked 1.2 innings, giving up four hits, four runs (three earned), didn't walk a batter, and struck out four. Juan Mejia had a really rough outing, taking the loss and falling to 1-5. In one-third of an inning, Mejia gave up three hits, four runs (three earned), walked two, and struck out one.
McCarthy Gives Rockies Early Lead
Jake McCarthy scored on Tyler Freeman's ground out in the first inning to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. The Brewers scored their first run in the top of the second on Luis Rengifo's ground out, tying things at 1-1.
Edouard Julien's RBI single scored Ezequiel Tovar and Colorado went back up 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Hunter Goodman stayed hot at the plate, hitting a solo home run -- his 16th homer this season -- and the Rockies went up 3-1 in the third inning.
All this led to the ninth and 10th innings, when both teams broke out the bats. Jake Bauers' single to center field drove in Brice Turang, getting the Brewers closer at 3-2. Sal Frelick doubled to center, scoring Blake Perkins and tying the game at 3-3.
Andrew Vaughn singled to center, driving home Bauers and Frelick to give Milwaukee a 5-3 lead. Now, we turn to the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Karros singled to right field and Sterlin Thompson moved to second base. With one out, Freeman singled to load the bases.
Colorado Forces Extra Innings
On a 3-2 pitch with one out, Chad Stevens walked and Thompson scored, moving Colorado within 5-4. Goodman's sacrifice fly to right let Braxton Fulford score, tying the game at 5-5 and forcing extra innings.
With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 10th inning, Bauers doubles and two runs score as Milwaukee goes up 7-5. Garrett Mitchell's RBI single added to the Brewers' lead to 8-5. Frelick singled to right field and Bauers scored what would be Milwaukee's final run at 9-5.
Give this Rockies team credit. They went down with a fight.
In their half of the 10th inning, Thompson's two-run single got the Rockies within 9-7. Yet they just couldn't get over the hump and lost.
These two will go at it again on Saturday at Coors Field.
