For the second consecutive month, Colorado Rockies first baseman TJ Rumfield has won National League Rookie of the Month honors. Yes, he's been that good.
TJ Rumfield has been putting his stamp on being a longtime member of the Colorado Rockies so far this season. Rumfield keeps Rockies fans and MLB scouts focusing on his play more and more.
Well, Rumfield, for the second straight month, has been named National League Rookie of the Month. That means he's been seen as the top rookie in both May and June around the National League.
What a great honor for player who has exhibited a lot of grit and resiliency in helping the Rockies look to climb out of the National League West Division cellar.
NL Rookie of the Month Faces Giants
Rumfield will have a chance to showcase his on-field talents in a bigger way on Friday night, when the NL West fourth-place San Francisco Giants open a three-game series against Colorado at Coors Field.
He is the first player to win NL Rookie of the Month honors in back-to-back months since Atlanta's Michael Harris II did the deal in August-September 2022.
Rumfield had a career-high 13-game hitting streak from mid- to late-June for Colorado. He appeared in 26 games for the Rockies in June. Rumfield put up a slash line of .316/.400/.589.
He scored 14 runs and had nine doubles, one triple, five home runs and 17 RBIs.
Additionally, Rumfield led all qualified NL rookies in average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, doubles (nine), extra-base hits (15) and total bases (56). Rumfield also ranked among NL rookies in hits (30, tied for first), home runs (tied for first), walks (12, second) and runs scored (14, tied for third).
Rumfield Came Over From Yankees
Originally in the New York Yankees' system, Colorado picked up Rumfield in a January 2026 trade involving right-handed pitcher Angel Chivilli. Rumfield made his mark during Spring Training for the Rockies, eventually winning the Abby Greer Award for being the team's Most Valuable Player during Spring Training.
His contract was purchased by the big-league club on March 25. Rumfield's first day in the major leagues? Opening Day this season.
Other Rockies players and the months in which they received Rookie of the Month Awards, according to the Rockies' media department. include Nolan Jones (September/October 2023), Antonio Senzatela (April 2017), and Trevor Story (April 2016).
Also, Ian Stewart (July 2008), Troy Tulowitzki (August 2007), Garrett Atkins (June 2005), Clint Barmes (April 2005) and Jason Jennings (August 2002).
With this weekend's series against the Giants having implications on where the Rockies can put themselves in the NL West standings ahead of the All-Star break, look for Rumfield to have a stellar series. He's been a player who has shown, despite his youth, an ability to step up and deliver when it counts.
Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer will be looking for Rumfield to do just that, starting on Friday night.
