Tenth-inning rally helped Los Angeles Dodgers put a bow on a series sweep against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The Colorado Rockies were not able to win a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in their three-game series at Coors Field over the past three days. This really set the Rockies back as they are trying to get into fourth place in the National League West Division.
Mickey Moniak's two-run home run helped Wednesday night's game get into extra innings, but the Rockies' bullpen couldn't keep the Dodgers off the scoreboard. That bullpen has performed well at times, yet they just couldn't get over the hump late.
Los Angeles scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning and that was enough to give the Dodgers a 6-4 win.
It also gave the NL West leaders a three-game sweep over the Rockies.
Freeland leaves early
Colorado sent Kyle Freeland out to start in front of a crowd split between Dodgers fans and Rockies fans. Freeland, though, left the game with an injury in the fourth inning. Freeland worked 3.2 innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs, walked one, struck out five, and surrendered two home runs.
Mark Manfredi, who was part of a trade that sent pitcher Antonio Senzatela to Milwaukee, made his first big-league appearance for the Rockies. He worked 1.1 innings and gave up one hit and struck out two.
Reliever Jimmy Herget, the sixth pitcher used by Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer on Wednesday night, took the loss. Herget worked two-thirds of an inning in the top of the 10th inning, giving up two hits, two runs (one earned), didn't walk a batter, didn't strike out a batter, and also didn't surrender a home run. He's now 0-5 overall.
Roki Sasaki got the start for the Dodgers from manager Dave Roberts. Sasaki worked five innings, giving up seven hits, two earned runs, walked one, struck out six, and didn't give up a home run. But he didn't figure into the decision at all.
Brock Stewart worked the sixth inning for the Dodgers and earned a hold. But Alex Vesia picked up a blown save, working one inning, giving up one hit, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out two. Moniak smashed his 20th home run this season off Vesia, tying the game at 4-4 at that point.
Rockies' bats didn't come through
Kyle Hurt got the win for the Dodgers, going to 4-1 this season. Tanner Scott came on in the bottom of the 10th inning and earned his 18th save.
Moniak ended up going 3-for-5 against Los Angeles pitching, while third baseman Connor Norby put up a 2-for-4 night at the plate.
Los Angeles jumped out to a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the third inning. TJ Rumfield singled and, after Zac Veen struck out, Norby doubled to center field. Rumfield found his way to third base. Adael Amador's first double this season allowed Rumfield and Norby to score and cut the Dodgers' lead to 4-2.
Moniak's homer tied things up 4-4 after seven innings.
This led all roads to a Dodgers' comeback in the top of the 10th inning. Teoscar Hernández singled to left and designated runner Andy Pages moved to third base. Freddie Freeman came up and connected on a sacrifice fly off of Herget, allowing Pages to score and put Los Angeles up 5-4.
Mookie Betts then singled to center and Hernández scored, giving the Dodgers their final 6-4 score. Scott came on in the bottom of the 10th and got three straight Rockies hitters out to secure the win.
Colorado still sits in last place in the National League West Division. The Rockies get a day off on Thursday before opening a three-game series at Coors Field against the Cleveland Guardians.
