While this series for the Colorado Rockies against the San Francisco Giants isn't for postseason play, there's something on the line.

A number of times, baseball fans will see stories where someone writes "throw out the record books when these two teams meet." That works in some situations, but the Colorado Rockies want to change their situation in the National League West Division.

The Rockies are in last place in the division, a seat that they've been in for some time. Colorado already has won more games this season, with a few weeks left, than it did in the entire 2025 season.

Now, though, what does Colorado need to do to climb out of the cellar? Simple. Sweep a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park by the San Francisco Bay. The Rockies are just coming off a series win against the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this week in Phoenix.

This season hasn't gone the way that the Giants hoped it would do so under manager Tony Vitello. The Rockies just wanted to improve on last season's debacle and, in that vein, they have done so. Postseason play was going to be a stretch, yet the team has remained committed to the vision that Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer has for Colorado.

Who will win? Who will lose? That remains in the air as a Friday night game and two afternoon games on Saturday and Sunday await these teams. Fans know that the winds can get crazy at times in San Francisco, a lot of that happening in day games. Now, we have to wait and see which team handles that windy weather the best.

Rockies vs. Giants Probable Starters

As luck would have it, the Giants are sending two of their best pitchers this season to square off against the Rockies.

Friday, Aug. 14: LHP Kyle Freeland (3-10, 6.63) vs. RHP Landen Roupp (7-11, 4.22)

Sure, go ahead and laugh at Freeland's overall numbers. Take into account that, over his last three starts, Freeland has around a 3.00 ERA. That includes a complete-game victory in front of the home fans at Coors Field.

Roupp hasn't been sharp in recent starts, seeing his ERA in three games soar above 6.00. This might be a solid Colorado win if Freeland can come back out and pitch like he's been doing recently.

Saturday, Aug. 15: RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-10, 6.83) vs. RHP Logan Webb (7-7, 3.59)

As much as Colorado fans want their team to sweep the series, that might get interrupted with Webb taking the mound for the Giants. He's been one of the sharpest starters for Vitello, yet he's also had some tough starts.

Lorenzen needs to come out here and ignore his record and ERA. Just throw strikes and get Giants hitters off stride. If he can accomplish that goal, then Colorado might have a chance to get a second straight victory in this series.

Sunday, Aug. 16: RHP Gabriel Hughes (0-4, 5.61) vs. RHP Blake Tidwell (0-0, 2.78)

Hughes and Tidwell are still trying to find some leverage in improving their season records. Hughes has shown signs of being a strong addition to the Colorado rotation at times. Still, he'll need to come out and tame San Francisco hitters looking to take advantage of his pitches.

Despite not recording a decision, Rockies batters better keep their eyes peeled for Tidwell's arsenal of pitches. He might send Colorado hitters back to the dugout muttering under their breaths.

Start Times/TV

Friday night's game has a first pitch scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Mountain time. Saturday and Sunday's afternoon contests are scheduled to start at 2:05 p.m. Mountain time.

All three games will be carried on Rockies.TV. Radio broadcasts, as usual, are on KOA NewsRadio 850 AM & 94.1 FM.
