The Kansas City Royals are coming to Coors Field for a weekend series with the Colorado Rockies, pitting two teams having tough seasons against one another.
When the Colorado Rockies get back home to Coors Field on Friday night, it will be one struggling team against another struggling team in the Kansas City Royals. The Royals were looking to potentially get into some postseason chatter with players like Bobby Witt Jr. and wily veteran catcher Salvador Perez this season.
The results for them, though, just like Colorado, have not been good this season.
Folks, here are two teams that haven't even won 50 games in the 2026 MLB season yet. That is a tough pill to swallow for both franchises' fan bases.
The series kicks off on Friday night and runs through Saturday and Sunday. Kansas City cones into the series with a 46-64 overall record, while Colorado is 42-67. Don't be surprised if these two teams have a lot of trade talk going on this weekend as the MLB Trade Deadline comes up on Monday, Aug. 3.
Rockies vs. Royals: Probable Starters
Before breaking down these pitching matchups, let's be clear. Some of these pitchers might not be with these clubs should trades go down involving them, so pay attention if a listed starter doesn't actually take a turn.
Friday, July 31: Michael Wacha (5-7, 3.60 ERA) vs. Tomoyuki Sugano (10-4, 4.69 ERA)
Michael Wacha, despite the Royals' overall record, has done his best to keep his team in games. It hasn't always been pretty at times, too. Wacha has that 5-7 record, which is decent on a losing team, with a decent ERA.
Tomoyuki Sugano does have that impressive won-loss record, but his 4.69 ERA doesn't look pretty. This might end up as Sugano's final start in a Rockies uniform, too.
Saturday, Aug. 1: Luinder Avila (5-3, 4.81 ERA) vs. Ryan Feltner (3-5, 5.73 ERA)
Luinder Avila has been able to have a decent won-loss mark going into this series. That 4.81 ERA, though, probably makes some Royals fans wonder if he'll be around after the trade deadline.
Ryan Feltner has been fair, not decent and not great, for the Rockies. He, too, might be making his last start for Colorado here. That 5.73 ERA weighs heavily over him.
Sunday, Aug, 2: Seth Lugo (4-6, 4.22 ERA) vs. Kyle Freeland (2-10, 7.34 ERA)
Let's go ahead and get Kyle Freeland out of the way. It's very possible that Freeland does not make this start on Sunday. If the trades are hot and heavy, then Freeland might see his address change in a heartbeat.
Seth Lugo doesn't have a good record or ERA, yet he keeps going out there to take on opposing hitters. If Lugo is on his "A" game, then the Colorado offense might have a long day at the plate.
