Los Angeles Angels used six-run second inning to power them over Colorado Rockies 11-4.
On Wednesday night at LA Angels at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., the Colorado Rockies had a chance to pick up a series sweep against the homestanding Los Angeles Angels.
That didn't happen, though, as Rockies starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen wasn't throwing his best stuff. It really appeared that whatever Lorenzen was throwing was good enough for a pretty bad Angels team to connect at the plate.
With that said, the Angels beat the Rockies 11-4. The result gives both the Rockies and Angels identical 24-39 overall records, but Colorado plays in the National League West Division and Los Angeles plays in the American League West Division.
Lorenzen falls to 2-8 this season, leaving some fans wondering if Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer might consider taking him out of the rotation. Lorenzen gave up 10 hits, eight earned runs, walked five, and struck out one. Lorenzen now has an 8.01 ERA.
Angels starter Walbert Ureña picked up the win, going to 3-4 overall. Ureña worked six innings, giving up three hits, three earned runs, walking three, and striking out seven. He did give up a home run to the Rockies, but he had a very effective outing.
Three Angels relievers worked the final three innings, giving up four hits, one earned run, didn't walk a batter, and struck out two.
Los Angeles jumped on Lorenzen in a big way in a six-run second inning. With runners on first and second base and no outs, Jose Siri smacked his third double this season. Donovan Walton scored and Nick Madrigal moved to third base. The Angels went up 1-0.
A Lorenzen wild pitch allowed Madrigal to score and Los Angeles then went up 2-0. Logan O'Hoppe singled to right, scoring Siri and Los Angeles increased its lead to 3-0.
Vaughn Grissom, who later hit a two-run home run, singled to left and O'Hoppe scored, Mike Trout moved to third base, and Grissom took second on a throwing error by Rockies outfielder Sterlin Thompson. It was 4-0 Angels at that point.
Another Lorenzen wild pitch allowed Trout to score and that was 5-0 Angels. Oswald Peraza singled to left and Grissom scored to make it 6-0 after the second inning.
The Rockies got their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Troy Johnston doubled to right field and Hunter Goodman scored, slicing the Angels' lead to 6-1.
Grissom, with one out in the fourth inning, hit his fourth homer this season. It was a two-run blast and the Angels now were up 8-1. In the top of the fifth, Tyler Freeman smoked his third home run this season, bringing home Edouard Julien ahead of him. Colorado was down 8-3 by this time.
Jo Adell's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth upped the Angels' lead to 9-3. Peraza's double in the bottom of the sixth scored Wade Meckler and Los Angeles reached double digits in runs at 10-3. Madrigal added an RBI single himself, increasing the Angels' lead to 11-3.
Johnston's single in the top of the eighth inning scored Wade Meckler, and that wrapped up the scoring at 11-4.
The Rockies have now won two consecutive series. They will get a day off before starting a weekend three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field on Friday night.
