Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Sean Sullivan was looking to help his team pick up a series win at Wrigley Field on Wednesday night against the Chicago Cubs. A seven-run second inning doomed Sullvan and Colorado and kept them from the win column.

The Cubs took an early 7-1 lead and probably felt the win was in the bag. Give the Rockies credit, though, for battling back. It just wasn't enough as Chicago defeated Colorado 8-6.

Sullivan took the loss, his first decision this season. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer let Sullivan pitch through four innings, giving up nine hits, eight earned runs, walked two, struck out two, and gave up two home runs.

Javier Assad worked 5.2 innings for the Cubs and got the win. Assad's record is now 5-1 as he allowed five hits, two earned runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out one. He also surrendered two home runs and left Wednesday night's game with a 3.89 ERA.

The Cubs' Jacob Webb worked the ninth inning and surrendered a home run. But he was able to wriggle out of trouble and get his second save for Cubs manager Craig Counsell and his teammates.

Alex Bregman walked to open the Cubs' second inning, then Ian Happ singled to right field. Matt Shaw tripled to center field, bringing home Bregman and Happ for a 2-0 Cubs lead. Carson Kelly doubled to right field, scoring Shaw and the Cubs were now up 3-0.

Dansby Swanson then smacked his eighth homer this season, a blast over the center-field wall at Wrigley Field. It was a two-run shot and Chicago went up 5-0. With one out, Nico Hoerner singled to right. Seiya Suzuki doubled to left and Hoener scored to bump up Chicago's advantage to 6-0.

Michael Busch singled to right field, moving Hoerner to third base. Bregman came up for the second time in this inning and connected on a sacrifice fly. By the time this half-inning was done, the Cubs were comfortably up 7-0.

Or, so they thought.

Sterlin Thompson hit his first home run this season, showing Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer that he can produce at the plate. Thompson's dinger closed the lead to 7-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has been hot lately, notched his 15th home run this season. Umpires reviewed the home run call to make sure that the ball was inside the foul pole. After the call was upheld, the Cubs went up 8-1. That was the final touch offensively for Chicago on Wednesday night.

It almost came back to bite them.

Thompson decided one home run wasn't enough, so he hit his second career dinger (and second on Wednesday night). The Rockies moved closer at 8-2.

Colorado went to work and put together a three-run eighth inning. With Ethan Roberts on the mound for the Cubs in place of Hoby Milner, Jake McCarthy led off with a walk. Tyler Freeman followed with a single, and a passed ball by Cubs catcher Carson Kelly put runners at second and third base.

TJ Rumfield grounded out, bringing home McCarthy and cutting into Chicago's advantage at 8-3. Catcher Hunter Goodman, who seemingly cannot be slowed down lately, slammed his 15th home run this season. Freeman scored ahead of Goodman and that made it 8-5 Cubs.

Webb came on in the ninth for the Cubs and, with one out, Kyle Karros hit his fourth homer this season. It traveled over the ivy-covered walls in right-center field, bringing Colorado even closer at 8-6. Webb, though, got McCarthy and Freeman out to end the threat and the ballgame.

The Rockies were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five total runners on base. Chicago was much better, though, going 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base.

Colorado takes a day off on Thursday before opening a three-game weekend series at Coors Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
